Jimmy Buffett to be Inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

April 21st, 2024

The 2024 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees were announced on Sunday night during American Idol and Jimmy Buffett is among the 16 inductees.

Buffett is to be inducted in the Musical Excellence category: “This category includes artists, musicians, songwriters and producers whose originality and influence creating music have had a dramatic impact on music.”

Other inductees include Mary J. Blige, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, and Ozzy Osbourne.

Jimmy Buffett’s “Gulf & Western” music has surfed the soundwaves with island escapism since 1973. Born into a long line of sailors, it was only natural that Buffett would be drawn to nautical themes, Caribbean rhythms and instrumentation, and the carefree life of a tropical troubadour. Introduced to Key West in the early 1970s by friend and Texas music icon Jerry Jeff Walker, Buffett moved to the Keys and began writing sunny songs that made everyone want to join him. His lyrics reflected his life – as a world traveler, pilot, and sailor, he wrote about his plane being shot at by Jamaican police (“Jamaica Mistaica”), getting lost in the Sahara Desert (“Buffet Hotel”), and smugglers he had known around the Florida Gulf Coast (“A Pirate Looks at 40”). Buffett’s tropical folk-rock sound is best exemplified by the songs he dubbed “The Big 8,” which included hits such as “Why Don’t We Get Drunk,” “Come Monday,” “Margaritaville,” and “Cheeseburger in Paradise.”

In 1975, Buffett formed the Coral Reefer Band, which would back him for his entire career. In 1985, then-band member Timothy Schmidt is credited with coining the nickname “Parrothead” for Buffett’s devoted fans, both as an homage to the “Deadhead” moniker used for Grateful Dead fans and a reference to the brightly-colored Hawaiian-style beach attire of Buffett’s audiences. The same year, Buffett began to grow his Parrothead lifestyle empire, which eventually included restaurant chains, bars, hotels, casinos, retirement communities, beverages, home goods, apparel, accessories, books, and even a musical.

The 2000s brought Buffett much acclaim. “Margaritaville” was included in the “Songs of the Century,” a list of 365 songs of historical significance selected by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts. He won the Country Music Association Awards’ Vocal Event of the Year for his 2003 duet with Alan Jackson, “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere,” and in 2010, he was named the tenth biggest touring artist of the decade, with 4.5 million ticket sales over the previous 10 years.

Buffett’s influence can be heard in the mischievous humor and tropical vibes of hits from some of today’s country greats, including Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, Zac Brown, Luke Bryan, and Dierks Bentley.

Watch Video Premiere of “University of Bourbon Street”

March 7th, 2024

Billboard.com has the exclusive premiere of the new music video for “University of Bourbon Street” from Jimmy Buffett’s final album Equal Strain on All Parts.

The video is full of scenes of Jimmy in New Orleans over the years, as well as footage from Jimmy in the studio and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band performing for the song.

The late Jimmy Buffett deeply loved New Orleans. After graduating from the University of Southern Mississippi, he moved to the Crescent City for a year and his time there informed the rest of his musical life.

He played New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival at least a dozen times, adored New Orleans legendary composer/artist Allen Toussaint (who wrote a song called “I’m Gonna Hang with Jimmy Buffett”), recorded and toured with local icons The Neville Brothers, and when asked by a journalist if he thought “there would be a Jimmy Buffett if there wasn’t a New Orleans,” Buffett replied, “I don’t think there ever would have been.”

Buffett Cameo in ‘Life & Beth’

February 21st, 2024

In the new season of the Hulu series ‘Life & Beth,’ Jimmy Buffett can be seen strumming his guitar on a street corner while singing “I Will Play for Gumbo.”

From USA Today: “Amy Schumer on ‘infectious’ Jimmy Buffett, his ‘Life & Beth’ cameo as street singer”

Jimmy Buffett can be seen strummin’ his six-string in the new season of “Life & Beth.” Hulu’s slice-of-life comedy, loosely based on that of star/creator Amy Schumer, features the king of carefree choruses in the second of the season’s 10 episodes (now streaming).

For his “Life & Beth” cameo, filmed in New Orleans, the “Margaritaville” singer returned to his humble beginnings of busking in the streets of The Big Easy, a city he loved.

Schumer says she listened to Buffett’s music growing up: “It just made you feel like everything was going to be OK.” The comedian struck up a friendship with Buffett, his wife Jane Slagsvol and their daughter, Sarah “Delaney” Buffett about five years ago.

“A time when we were hanging out, I said, ‘You know, we’re shooting in New Orleans,’” Schumer remembers seated next to her onscreen love interest for the series Michael Cera. “I said, ‘Oh my God, imagine you were on the show.’ He said, ‘I would do it!’ I thought, ‘No, he’s just saying that.’ But he didn’t waver.”

Buffett picks on an acoustic guitar in khaki shorts singing “I Will Play For Gumbo” from his 1999 album “Beach House on the Moon,” and Beth drops some money in his guitar case for his performance. A title card at the end of the episode reads, “In Loving Memory of Jimmy Buffett, who got his start busking on the streets of New Orleans.”

Schumer says Buffett piloted in for the role.

“He used to fly himself around,” Cera says. “Incredible lifestyle.”

To see Buffett’s quick cameo, watch season 2 episode 2 at the 6 minute mark.
