“Margaritaville” Trademarked for Video Game Use

November 3rd, 2009

The video game blog Joystiq discovered a recent trademark filing for the word “Margaritaville” that would permit its use for video gaming purposes.

The filing covers several classes including computer game software and software for mobile phones.

Joystiq offers these fun guesses for what it could be:

  • A near-endless RPG: The Quest for the Lost Shaker of Salt
  • A sailing simulator: Son of a Son of a Sailing Simulator
  • A smooth rhythm game, which is sadly what it probably will be
  • A smooth rhythm game/sailing simulator, which … which might be kind of magical

Margaritaville in Cayman Robbed

October 16th, 2009

The Margaritaville Cafe on Grand Cayman was robbed Friday morning:

Two armed men held up Margaritaville shortly after it opened on Friday morning.

The robbers, one armed with a gun and the other with a knife, made their way to the office on the upper floor and ordered the female accountant at gunpoint to hand over cash.

The amount of money the robbers made off with in the 8.20am hold up is unknown. The men escaped through a back door that leads on to Cardinall Avenue.

Two people, the accountant and a manager, were in the office at the time. The manager was ordered to lie on the floor and was told that if he moved, he would be shot.

No–one was hurt in the robbery.

Buffett Expected to Perform Outside Landshark Stadium on Monday

September 18th, 2009

The Palm Beach Post expects Jimmy Buffett to performs outside of the Miami Dolphins home field before Monday night’s game against the Colts:

Come Monday, Colts will be invading Land Shark Stadium, and so will Parrotheads.

The Dolphins plan a series of festivities before their game against Indianapolis on Monday Night Football, including a “surprise artist” performing on the Land Shark Tailgate Stage near Gate F at 7:45 p.m., nearly an hour before the 8:40 kickoff.

Sources said the artist is Jimmy Buffett, whose breakthrough hit in 1974 was Come Monday and whose fans are known as Parrotheads. This summer, LandShark Lager, the beer Buffett promotes, attached its name to the former Dolphin Stadium. Buffett also rewrote the lyrics to his song Fins to accommodate the Dolphins, who plan to play it after some scores.

Buffett is a friend and Palm Beach neighbor of Dolphins owner Stephen M. Ross, who is attempting to enhance the “game-day experience” with an influx of starpower to premiere Monday. Marc Anthony, Gloria and Emilio Estefan and Venus and Serena Williams are new limited partners in the Dolphins.

Festivities begin at 5:15 p.m. when Broward-based Jimmy Stowe, who occasionally sings with with Buffett, performs on the Land Shark stage.

Other activities include the “celebrity orange carpet” walk near Gate G at 7 p.m. (the celebrity list is to be announced) and a video presentation featuring Buffett’s Here We Are at 8:15. Immediately preceding kickoff will be a Thunderbolts fly-over, pyrotechnics and coin toss by honorary captains Bob Griese and Dan Marino.

As for the Parrotheads, 600 also are scheduled to dance to Fins at halftime.

Coastal Sues Trump Over Atlantic City Casino Deal

July 29th, 2009

In June the deal was nixed to transform Trump Marina Casino in Atlantic City into a Margaritaville themed casino resort and now Coastal Development LLC is suing Trump Entertainment Resorts:

Donald Trump, who has carefully cultivated an image for quality and opulence, ran at least one of his casino properties like a fleabag hotel.

Then, he tried to unloaded it on one of his protégés and singer Jimmy Buffett, even though it needed a reported $50 million in repairs to bring it up to standard.

The assertions are contained in a lawsuit filed as part of bankruptcy proceedings involving Trump’s Atlantic City casinos. Trump, who was ousted when the properties fell into bankruptcy under a heavy debt load, is attempting regain control of his casino empire.

But the company that was slated to buy the Trump Marina Hotel Casino, claims in the $17 million lawsuit that holding company Trump Entertainment Resorts essentially slummed the property by withholding maintenance and repairs when Trump was in charge. Instead of fixing leaky windows and skylights, for example, the casino put plants underneath them to catch the drips.

The suit also claims Trump Entertainment deliberately tried to hid its financial condition to try to salvage the deal. Coastal agreed to pay $316 million for the casino, and intended to partner with singer Buffett to take advantage of the singer’s popular “Margaritaville” restaurants and bars.

“Unbeknownst to the Coastal parties, the defendants intended to strip the casino of its valuable customers and key personnel, destroy its image with its potential and current patrons, and let the casino fall into a complete state of disrepair such that no lender would ever finance its purchase,” the lawsuit states.

Although Trump Entertainment promised to make repairs, little, if any, of the promised work was done. Beside leaking winds, the casino had inoperable air conditioning units; wind and weather damage at the building’s Crystal Tower, and kitchen equipment that has been removed, court papers state.
