Buffett Makes Surprise Appearance at Stephen Talkhouse

July 29th, 2009

Tips coming in that Jimmy Buffett has made a surprise appearance at The Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett, New York tonight.

Ilo Ferreira was the scheduled performer and the Talkhouse website listed “with a special guest”. The night was a charity event for the Wounded Warriors Project, a cause that Jimmy and Mac McAnally have played benefits for.

UpdateTheMusicFile has some details and photos.

[A] surprise was in store for us last night as my friend Katie O’Connell got word late in the day that Buffett would be performing at the tiny and beloved Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett, NY.

Just a few miles down the road from tony East Hampton, “The Talkhouse” is the antithesis of snobbery and just might be one of the last real deals left on the East End of Long Island. I adore the place. On the bill last night was “Ilo Ferriera w/ Special Guest”. Word had obviously spread quickly that the “guest” was JB and by the time we arrived, the place was packed/sold out/nada with Parrotheads pouring out of the windows and a growing crowd in the streets praying for a break.

We were lucky enough to get one of those breaks and were treated to what can only be described as one of those rare nights of music where everyone is instantly your new best friend (and handing a $20 over 3 rows of people to some guy at the bar to buy your next round seems like a perfectly normal thing to do). Sardine can would not be too much of a stretch… but a sardine can that every single person felt blessed to be jammed into.

Turns out Ilo’s a real talent- blending Reggae and Pop with an African flair and enough Buffett meets Jack Johnson to appeal to a very wide audience. The highlights of the night were of course when Jimmy joined Ilo on stage and poured through many of his most beloved hits (Is there one word of “Margaritaville” that someone on the planet doesn’t know?)

Coastal Sues Trump Over Atlantic City Casino Deal

July 29th, 2009

In June the deal was nixed to transform Trump Marina Casino in Atlantic City into a Margaritaville themed casino resort and now Coastal Development LLC is suing Trump Entertainment Resorts:

Donald Trump, who has carefully cultivated an image for quality and opulence, ran at least one of his casino properties like a fleabag hotel.

Then, he tried to unloaded it on one of his protégés and singer Jimmy Buffett, even though it needed a reported $50 million in repairs to bring it up to standard.

The assertions are contained in a lawsuit filed as part of bankruptcy proceedings involving Trump’s Atlantic City casinos. Trump, who was ousted when the properties fell into bankruptcy under a heavy debt load, is attempting regain control of his casino empire.

But the company that was slated to buy the Trump Marina Hotel Casino, claims in the $17 million lawsuit that holding company Trump Entertainment Resorts essentially slummed the property by withholding maintenance and repairs when Trump was in charge. Instead of fixing leaky windows and skylights, for example, the casino put plants underneath them to catch the drips.

The suit also claims Trump Entertainment deliberately tried to hid its financial condition to try to salvage the deal. Coastal agreed to pay $316 million for the casino, and intended to partner with singer Buffett to take advantage of the singer’s popular “Margaritaville” restaurants and bars.

“Unbeknownst to the Coastal parties, the defendants intended to strip the casino of its valuable customers and key personnel, destroy its image with its potential and current patrons, and let the casino fall into a complete state of disrepair such that no lender would ever finance its purchase,” the lawsuit states.

Although Trump Entertainment promised to make repairs, little, if any, of the promised work was done. Beside leaking winds, the casino had inoperable air conditioning units; wind and weather damage at the building’s Crystal Tower, and kitchen equipment that has been removed, court papers state.

From Under My Lone Palm: “Save The Manatee”

July 27th, 2009

Time for another installment of From Under My Lone Palm. This month Justin provides a full and detailed history of Jimmy Buffett’s involvement in saving the manatees:

It seems Jimmy began his quest to ’save the manatee’ on February 17, 1981 at a show in Tallahassee, FL. Then Florida Gov. Bob Graham met up with Jimmy and Jimmy expressed his interest in saving the mammal to him. Bob had heard Jimmy’s song “Growing Older But Not Up” and that had peaked his interest. A new federally funded Manatee Advisory Committee had been set up, and since Jimmy couldn’t be apart of that, Jimmy and Bob put together the “Save the Manatee” committee. So on May 26, 1981, the first meeting of the “Save the Manatee” committee took place in Tallahassee.
