From Under My Lone Palm: Movieville

March 17th, 2009

Justin’s back this month with another “From Under My Lone Palm”, and this time it’s a great writeup on the “Margaritaville” movie that never happened:

I finally begin thinking about all the useless information I had read on Jimmy over the years and the idea struck me: The Margaritaville Movie. It seems once upon a time, Jimmy had the great idea to put his most famous song on the big screen. Although nothing really ever came of it but a lot of talk, it was a noble idea. I know I personally would have loved to see it happen. And who knows, maybe it will one day. But here’s the story of the movie once upon a time ago.

M’Ville Key West Writeup On Last Week’s Concert

February 16th, 2009

The Margaritaville Key West website has a writeup of Jimmy Buffett’s private show that he played last Thursday night. The article mentions that Buffett has been in Mac McAnally’s studio in Muscle Shoals, AL working on new songs:

The current state of the country prompted our troubled troubadour to take pen in hand and put his spin on the state of the union, noting in particular that “we have a lot to drink about.” And since drinking was involved, what better place than Key West to premier the new song.

Key West’s current living legend embodies the spirit of our islands infamous forerunners in the guise of shipwreck salvors, road weary writers and bar owners; it’s safe to say that best-selling author Jimmy Buffett has certainly found treasure in Margaritaville. So he and Mac came into town on Lincoln’s Birthday to share the new song, spend some time with old friends and favor the Margaritaville crew with Key West classics, the songs we know by heart.

Buffett Performs at Key West Margaritaville

February 14th, 2009

Jimmy Buffett performed a surprise show at his Margaritaville Cafe in Key West on Thursday night. The Key West Citizen has an article on the performance:

Singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett rolled out his musical road map of Key West and Stock Island during an unpublicized concert at Margaritaville Thursday night.

Buffett, along with guitar player Mac McAnally, performed a special acoustic show for his employees, friends and fans. Before admitting the general public, Buffett gave his employees and their families front-row seats.

During the show, Buffett paid homage to Sunshine Smith, a Key West resident and his longtime business associate he referred to as his “dear partner.” Smith has managed the 62-year-old star’s merchandising ventures for decades and oversaw the first Margaritaville in the Key West Bight in the 1980s.

He told Margaritaville employees, who usually have to work during his concerts, that he wanted to make sure they got to see his show while he was in town this time.

“I don’t give a s— if you come to work tomorrow,” he joked, saying he understood if they had hangovers on Friday. “I don’t care what Sunshine says.”

Buffett mainly focused on songs that were written in or about Key West and Stock Island, including “A Pirate Looks at Forty,” “Woman Going Crazy on Caroline Street” and “Grapefruit Juicy Fruit,” which he called the “national anthem of Stock Island.” Buffett also debuted a new song called “We’ve Got A Lot to Drink About,” which he played twice.
