Jimmy Buffett 2010 Year in Review

He just turned 64, but Jimmy Buffett continues to go at it at a strong pace. And in 2010, he had another big year. What do you think was the biggest Buffett story of the year?

January

  • Margaritaville Key West celebrated its 25th anniversary
  • Buffett performs at his Hawaii restaurant
  • On January 13th, we launched Jimmy Buffett World 5.0, completely revamping the site to the look it has today
  • Haiti struck by massive earthquake, Jimmy cuts video pleading for help
  • Jimmy plays benefit shows in Tahiti and Bora Bora, raising $40,000 for a local school
  • Buffett attends NFC Championship game between the Saints and Vikings. He played a surprise show for some lucky tailgaters before the game.

February

  • In early February, tour dates started trickling out. By the third week of February, nearly every show had been confirmed
  • Jimmy attend the Super Bowl in Miami (pictured right with the Lombardi trophy)
  • In mid-February tickets for the first summer tour dates began going on sale
  • Jimmy gets a mention on the NBC show “30 Rock”
  • Buffett plays a final leg of the Summerzcool Tour, hitting Florida and South Carolina

March

  • Filling his airplane with tents, Jimmy flew to Haiti to help with earthquake relief efforts
  • While in Haiti, Buffett performs for American troops at the US Embassy
  • On March 19th, the CMT Crossroads episode featuring Jimmy and the Zac Brown Band debuts
  • Jimmy plays surprise show at his Margaritaville in Panama City, Florida

April

  • Our April Fools joke had Buffett building a Margaritaville in Dubai. We even hooked a Radio Margaritaville host with that one
  • Margaritaville beats out Planet Hollywood for a piece of land in Hollywood, Florida
  • The 200th episode of South Park lampooned Jimmy Buffett again
  • On April 20th a live acoustic album entitled “Encores” hit stores
  • The Under the Big Top Tour kicked off in Tampa, Florida. Portions of the soundcheck were live-streamed on Ustream for the first time
  • During soundcheck on the 24th, Jimmy pulled out his iPad and chatted with fans that were watching the Ustream live-stream
  • Native Georgian Zac Brown joined Jimmy on stage at his Atlanta show

May

  • On May 1st, Buffett plays Nashville for the first time since 2003. Many fans had trouble getting to the show as heavy rains caused historic floods in the region
  • Jimmy makes the inaugural flight into the new Boscobel Aerodrome in Jamaica
  • Plans for the Margaritaville Beach Hotel are first announced
  • After a two week break, Jimmy hits the road again playing shows in Indy, Cincinnati, Houston, and Dallas
  • Jimmy’s official website Margaritaville.com gets a makeover, and we took you back to see how the site looked over the past 10+ years
  • On the Late Show with David Letterman, Jimmy is referenced in the Top 10 List
  • Buffett performs at an event honoring Michael Douglas
  • By the end of May the Gulf oil spill disaster is raging and Buffett joins with a Florida boatbuilder to help with relief efforts

June

  • On June 5th, Buffett toured Florida’s beaches with Governor Charlie Crist to see the effects of the Gulf oil spill
  • Buffett helped Briggs & Stratton cut through the red tape to get generators to Haiti
  • A gift-wrapped Jimmy speaks and performs for graduating students at the Lawrenceville School near Princeton, New Jersey
  • It’s announced that a Margaritaville Hotel will be built in Myrtle Beach
  • Jimmy visited his alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi, to see how their work was going combating the Gulf oil spill
  • On June 18th, the newest Margaritaville opens in Niagara Falls, Canada
  • A show for the Gulf Coast is announced by Jimmy. Kenny Chesney and the Zac Brown Band are also announced as performers
  • Buffett performs shows in Boston, Detroit, and East Troy, WI
  • On June 28th, amidst the height of the Gulf oil disaster, Buffett opens the Margaritaville Beach Hotel in Pensacola, Florida
  • Tropical Storm Alex forces a postponement of the Gulf Coast concert. The event is rescheduled for July 11th. Chesney and the Zac Brown Band are unable to attend on the new date
  • Buffett plays a surprise show at his sister’s restaurant in Gulf Shore, Alabama

July

  • Jimmy is interviewed on Anderson Cooper 360 as they walk along the Florida beach
  • On July 11th, Jimmy plays a free show for over 35,000 fans on the beach at Gulf Shores, Alabama. The concert is streamed live on CMT

August

  • On August 3rd, Jimmy played a surprise show at his newly opened Margaritaville in Niagara Falls
  • The tour is back in session again, as Jimmy plays shows in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Long Island, and Bristow, VA
  • Buffett streams video of the entire Pittsburgh show on Ustream
  • The Chicago Blackhawks’ Patrick Kane brought the Stanley Cup to the August 14th show in Chicago
  • Jimmy pens a happy birthday letter to his 8th grade Catholic school teacher, who turned 102
  • Buffett attends birthday party for former president Bill Clinton
  • It’s another mention on TV… Jimmy is referenced in an episode of Memphis Beat

September

  • On the 9th, Jimmy visited his alma mater again (Southern Miss) to discuss a couple of projects that he’s working on
  • Zac Brown Band releases new album that includes a duet with Jimmy
  • Buffett plays a show in Paris. Watch a video chronicling his trip to France

October

  • Jimmy plays a fundraiser for Florida governor candidate Alex Sink
  • Buffett plays a Fall tour leg on the West Coast with stops in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland, and Las Vegas
  • On October 20th it’s announced that a Margaritaville Cafe will be built at Chicago’s Navy Pier
  • The TV show “Modern Family” mentions Buffett in an episode

November

  • Coral Reefer Mac McAnally wins CMA Musician of the Year for the third straight year
  • On November 22nd the Margaritaville Nashville opens its doors
  • It’s announced that Jimmy will perform in Australia in January, the first Down Under tour in 20 years

December

  • On December 2nd, Jimmy made a surprise appearance at the Margaritaville Nashville
  • Buffett performs at the Andy Roddick Charity Gala in Austin, Texas on the 4th
  • A Land Shark Bar & Grill restaurant is announced to be coming to Myrtle Beach
  • A private show for American Express cardholders is held in Houston
  • Margaritaville Eyewear is now available for purchase
  • A third Sydney show is announced, plus a show in New Zealand
  • Buffett, along with Robert Greenidge and the Coral Reefer Band, perform “Winter Wonderland” on the Today Show
  • On Christmas Day, Jimmy celebrated his 64th birthday

2009 was another big year for Jimmy Buffett. His summer tour was hugely successful again, he partnered with the Miami Dolphins to rename their home field Landshark Stadium, and a new album dropped in December. And of course there was lots more in between. So here’s our Jimmy Buffett 2009 Year in Review:

January

  • In early January Jimmy made a swing through the Caribbean, making stops at his Margaritaville Cafes in Grand Cayman and Cozumel where he, Mac, and Nadirah played surprise shows
  • Buffett attends Wounded Warriors Project’s Soldier Ride in Key West
  • Spring and summer tour dates began to trickle out in mid-to-late January

February

  • On February 2nd Margaritaville.com confirmed all shows for the Summerzcool Tour
  • Also on February 2nd, Jimmy Buffett’s at the Beachcomber Restaurant opened in Honolulu
  • Parrothead license plates become available for South Carolina residents
  • On February 12th, Jimmy played a surprise show at the Margaritaville in Key West
  • About 2 weeks later, Mailboat Records releases 4 digital downloads from the Key West show
  • On Tuesday the 24th, Buffett and the Coral Reefers open the 2009 Summerzcool Tour in Maui
  • On the 26th he plays a private show for the opening of Jimmy Buffett’s at the Beachcomber

March

  • Jimmy performs at Netscape founder Jim Clark’s wedding in the British Virgin Islands
  • In late March, we report that Margaritaville Rum is coming soon
  • Also at the end of the month, Coral Reefer Mac McAnally releases a new single: “You First”

April

  • Buffett sends out an April Fool’s joke on his Twitter account saying that the summer tour has been canceled
  • On April 10th, Jimmy called in to Radio Margaritaville to discuss the tour and a new album in the works
  • First rumblings surface about Jimmy entering into a partnership with the Miami Dolphins
  • Spring tour kicks off in Atlanta on April 16th
  • Buffett also plays Dallas, Charlotte, Raleigh, and Tampa in April
  • A planned Today Show appearance by Jimmy in Key West in May is scrapped so that the NBC staff could stay in NYC to cover the Swine Flu outbreak

May

  • It was announced on May 1st that Jimmy had entered into a agreement with the Miami Dolphins to rename their home field “Landshark Stadium”
  • “Summerzcool” is released as a digital download
  • The Fall tour dates are removed from Margaritaville.com, causing mass speculation and frustrating parrotheads on the West Coast
  • On May 8th the Dolphins held a press conference in Miami announcing the stadium’s name change to Landshark Stadium. Jimmy performed at the event
  • Tour resumed on May 14th in Phoenix. Jimmy also plays Las Vegas, Concord CA, and Irvina CA in May
  • Additional Fall tour dates are announced in London, Paris, Orlando, and Charlottsville, VA. The San Diego, Seattle, and Las Vegas shows planned for the Fall are officially canceled

June

  • Trump Entertainment Resorts terminates the agreement with Coastal Development to buy the Trump Marina and Casino and turn it into a Margaritaville-themed casino
  • It’s announced that the first Canadian Margaritaville will open in Edmonton
  • “Margaritaville” referenced on The Colbert Report
  • On June 13th Jimmy performed at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee
  • i-Encore, a parrothead iPhone app is released in mid-June
  • Tour resumes on June 18th in Camden, NJ. Jimmy also plays in Pittsburgh and Boston
  • In late June, former Coral Reefer Tim Krekel (pictured right) died after a short battle with cancer

July

  • On July 1st, Jimmy Buffett and parrotheads are mentioned on an episode of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart”
  • Jimmy performs in London on July 5th
  • On July 9th, Jimmy rode along in the Lance Armstrong’s Team Astana car at the Tour de France
  • It was reported that Jimmy Buffett serenaded Walter Cronkite in the weeks before his death
  • In late July Coastal Development sues Trump over the Atlantic City casino deal
  • On the 29th, Jimmy makes a surprise appearance at the Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett, New York
  • Jimmy performs and is interviewed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on July 29th

August

  • Tour resumes in Cincinnati on the 6th. Jimmy also plays Chicago, Indy, Detroit, Atlantic City, Wantagh NY, and East Troy WI in the month of August

September

  • On the 2nd, Politico reports that Jimmy Buffett was at the White House
  • Jimmy speaks and performs at a memorial for Walter Cronkite in NYC on the 9th
  • In mid-September the Orlando show scheduled for November 14th was removed from Margaritaville.com’s tour dates page with no explanation given
  • Jimmy lends his boat to three combat veterans
  • Prior to the Dolphins Monday Night Football game on the 21st, Jimmy performs outside of the stadium
  • A new line of iced tea by Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville is announced
  • On September 30th it was announced that Jimmy had joined the effort to restore Miami’s Marine Stadium, the venue for the Live By The Bay show from 1985.

October

  • On October 16th the Margaritaville on Grand Cayman was robbed
  • Jimmy plays for the National Association of Convenience Stores in Las Vegas
  • Jimmy performs at Neil Young’s Bridge School Benefit in Mountain View, CA on October 24th

November

  • We reported on the 3rd that “Margaritaville” had been trademarked for video game use
  • On the 7th, Jimmy played a show on St. Barth’s for the 60th anniversary of Le Select
  • The CMA Awards were held on the 11th and Coral Reefer Mac McAnally won Musician Of The Year for the second straight year
  • Jimmy plays final shows of the Summerzcool Tour in Charlottsville VA, Toronto, Uncasville CT, and New York City
  • On the morning of the 23rd, Jimmy appeared on the Today Show to discuss his upcoming album “Buffet Hotel”

December

  • Jimmy’s new album “Buffet Hotel” is released. It’s Jimmy’s first studio album since “Take The Weather With You” in 2006
  • On the 9th, Jimmy and the Zac Brown Band tape an episode of CMT Crossroads in Nashville
  • We reported on the 13th that Buffett had acquired two new airplanes
  • On the 17th, we reported that an aviation departure procedure out of Palm Beach International Airport in Florida had been named after Jimmy
  • We report on the 18th that a job listing for a General Manager at a Margaritaville location in Nashville had been posted
  • On Christmas Day, Jimmy celebrated his 63rd birthday

Another year has come and gone, and we look back at some of the highlights from 2008:

January

  • Jimmy’s sister Lucy “Lulu” releases cookbook: “Crazy Sista Cooking”
  • Jimmy plays a charity benefit show in Hong Kong
  • In addition to Hong Kong show, Jimmy performs private show in Singapore and performs for troops aboard the USS Harry Truman (right)

February

  • February 4th was the 7 year anniversary of Jimmy getting ejected from Miami Heat game
  • The crew of the space shuttle Atlantis prepares for spacewalk by listening to Buffett’s “Oysters and Pearls”
  • It’s reported that a Michigan company would begin making chips and salsa for Jimmy’s Margaritaville Foods
  • In mid-February the annual trickle of tour dates begin to leak out, followed by the official tour announcements by the end of the month
  • Harrison Ford reveals in an interview with Barbara Walters that he got his ear pierced after a lunchtime birthday celebration with Jimmy and the late Ed Bradley
  • It’s announced that Buffett would build a new restaurant in Waikiki, Hawaii called “Jimmy Buffett’s At The Beachcomber”

March

  • Panama City Margaritaville opens on March 5th
  • On March 12th, Comedy Central’s “South Park” lampooned Jimmy Buffett (right)
  • March 17th marked the 30 year anniversary of the release of “Son Of A Son Of A Sailor”

April

  • Jimmy and Mac performed April 9th at the Glendale, AZ Margaritaville
  • On April 13th, Jimmy and Jane Buffett pledged $50,000 at Comedy Central’s “Night Of Too Many Stars Autism Benefit”
  • 2008 tour kicks off April 21st in Houston
  • Buffett plays St. Louis for the first time in 8 years
  • Other tour stops this month were Frisco, TX and Charlotte, NC

May

  • Freddie & The Fishsticks play benefit show at New Orleans Margaritaville on May 1st
  • Buffett plays New Orleans Jazz Fest on May 3rd
  • Jimmy’s latest novel, “Swine Not?” is released May 13th
  • Publicity rounds for new book include the Today Show, Regis & Kelly, and David Letterman
  • It’s reported May 29th that the Trump Casino in Atlantic City will be turned into a Margaritaville Casino

June

  • “Scenes You Know By Heart” DVD released exclusively through Walmart on June 3rd
  • Second leg of tour resumes in Atlanta on June 5th
  • Buffett also plays Raleigh, Detroit, New York City, and Philadelphia in the month of June

July

  • Tour resumes in Cincinnati on July 17th
  • Buffett also plays East Troy, Pittsburgh, Chicago twice, and Indianapolis in the month of July
  • It’s reported that because of the credit crunch, work was slowing on the Margaritaville Casino in Biloxi

August

  • Jimmy performs at the Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island on August 3rd
  • Tour resumes August 24th in Atlantic City
  • Buffett also plays Wantagh, NY and the first of two shows in Bristow, VA in August

September

  • Second show in Bristow, VA on September 1st
  • Other tour stops in September include two shows in Mansfield, MA
  • September 6th Mansfield show time moved up to 3 pm because of the approaching Hurricane Hanna
  • Buffett performs two shows in Paris, marking the second year in a row he’s played Paris
  • Mohegan Sun Margaritaville opens on September 29th
  • BuffettWorld debuts the Buffett Caption Contest

October

  • New monthly column debuts on BuffettWorld: “From Under My Lone Palm”, written by Justin
  • Coral Reefer Nadirah Shakoor releases album on October 14th: “Nod To The Storyteller”
  • West coast tour includes stops in San Diego, San Francisco, and two shows in Las Vegas
  • On October 23rd, Jimmy visited Google Headquarters where he spoke and performed

November

  • Jimmy’s dear friend and legendary Key West figure Captain Tony Tarracino died on November 1st
  • Jimmy performs November 2nd at a Barack Obama rally in Tampa, Florida (right)
  • On the 8th, Jimmy performed a private show at the Mohegan Sun Margaritaville Cafe
  • Radio Margaritaville becomes available to XM subscribers as the result of the Sirius XM merger
  • Coral Reefer Mac McAnally won CMA Musician of the Year at CMA Awards on November 12th
  • Jimmy attends University of Florida football game on the 15th where he was invited into the locker room by coach Urban Meyer

December

  • Jimmy Buffett turns 62 years old on Christmas Day
