Key West Margaritaville Escapes Damage From Nearby Fire

March 10th, 2009

A fire broke out Sunday evening on Duval Street in Key West, Florida but Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville Cafe escaped damage and reopened Monday afternoon:

Key West’s historic Duval Street reopened Monday morning after a fire swept through a building housing three well-known businesses and temporarily shut down other popular spots on the island city’s main street.

The fire, which started at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday and was contained by 1 a.m. Monday, wiped out a crepe shop, an art gallery and a sign shop. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries, city spokeswoman Alyson Crean said.

The fire department was working Monday to determine the cause of the blaze, Crean said.

Singer Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville restaurant and store was one of the businesses initially shut down, halting late-night festivities at the popular watering hole in mid-pour.

“I was hoping to go back in, finish off my shift and clean up, but they wouldn’t let us back in,” said waitress Patricija Hambrook. “It became bigger than we thought.

“We couldn’t close out checks, and the drinks we made were never served.”

Margaritaville’s restaurant reopened Monday afternoon, and its adjacent retail store reopened a few hours later, the fire department said.

Buffett Opens New Restaurant With Private Show

February 27th, 2009

The Honolulu Advertiser has an article on the private show that Jimmy Buffett played last night at his new Waikiki restaurant: Jimmy Buffett’s At The Beachcomber:

Jimmy Buffett christened his new Jimmy Buffett’s at the Beachcomber restaurant in Waikiki in style last night, putting on a nonstop two-hour concert for invited guests and VIPs.

“I refuse to participate in this recession,” Buffett told a cheering crowd, many of whom wore balloon animals in the shape of shark fins and parrotheads.

Dressed in his trademark yellow T-shirt, red board shorts and standing in bare feet, Buffett brought out old standards like “Come Monday,” “Cheeseburger in Paradise” and “Margaritaville,” played “Dukes on Sunday” with local favorite Henry Kapono and jammed all night alongside ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro and most of his Coral Reefer band.

He also premiered some new songs, basically putting on a full concert preview for fans who also came to town for Buffett’s concert tomorrow night at the Waikiki Shell.

Margaritaville Casino In Atlantic City May Not Happen

February 20th, 2009

An article in the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the sale of the Trump Marina Casino to Coastal Development LLC is in jeopardy due to a lack of secured financing:

Three bankruptcy filings and Donald J. Trump’s resignation as board chairman of Trump Entertainment Resorts Inc. have thrown the casino company into turmoil.

Finalizing the sale of Trump Marina Casino Hotel looks more remote than ever – but not because of those reasons.

The interested buyer, Coastal Development L.L.C., of New York, has not secured the financing to close the deal May 26 – the targeted closing date, according to those familiar with the sale negotiations.

Analysts of the gaming industry predict the sale will not happen any time soon, because of tight credit and the declining financial performance of the property.

“Coastal Marina [an affiliate of Coastal Development] is closely monitoring news and events in Atlantic City and needs to fully evaluate the developing situation and its effects on Coastal Marina’s interests,” said Charlie Leonard, spokesman for Coastal Development.

Coastal said it planned to transform the Trump Marina into a Margaritaville-themed casino using entertainer Jimmy Buffett.
