Jimmy Buffett Geocaching

September 11th, 2009

PHBalanced on Geocaching.com has created a Jimmy Buffett / Margaritaville themed geocache that leads you to “Margaritaville.”

What is geocaching? Here’s how Wikipedia describes it:

Geocaching is an outdoor activity in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called “geocaches” or “caches”) anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container (usually a tupperware or ammo box) containing a logbook. Larger containers can also contain items for trading, usually toys or trinkets of little value. Geocaching is most often described as a “game of high-tech hide and seek”, sharing many aspects with orienteering, treasure-hunting, and waymarking.

Geocaches are currently placed in over 100 countries around the world and on all seven continents, including Antarctica.[1] As of September 07 2009, there are over 893,500 active geocaches over the world.

If you are a geocacher, check this one out here.

Buffett Lends Boat to Wounded Soldiers

September 10th, 2009

One of the many charities that Jimmy Buffett quietly supports is the Wounded Warrior Project, an organization that seeks to improve the lives of soldiers that have been wounded in service to America.

In July, Buffett made a surprise appearance at a WWP benefit on Long Island. And recently he lent his boat and captain for three wounded soldiers to go on a fishing excursion:

The three combat veterans went fishing from the Gone Fishing Marina in Montauk last Thursday as part of the Wounded Warrior Project’s continuing effort to quiet the storm that began with their service in Iraq, Afghanistan, and, in Mr. Amira’s case, on Sept. 11.

The musician Jimmy Buffett had invited them aboard his Margaritavitch in the care of Capt. Vinnie Lasorsa, who headed the boat offshore in September’s silver light past Montauk Point and toward Block Island upon an unusually calm sea.

To great applause and good-natured ribbing, Mr. Quiroz caught his second big bass, a carbon copy of the first. The Margaritavitch returned again and again to the stack of big bass, the likes of which the captain said he had never seen on the fish finder. The three wounded warriors smiled at the day and vowed to turn others on to the Wounded Warrior Project and its outings.

Orlando Tour Date Removed From Margaritaville.com

September 10th, 2009

The November 14th Jimmy Buffett show at the Amway Arena in Orlando, Florida has been taken off of the Margaritaville.com Tour Dates page without explanation. The show was orginally announced on May 22nd, along with the London, Paris, and Charlottesville shows.

An e-mail response from Amway Arena didn’t shed much light on the subject:

At this time we still don’t have confirmed information on that concert. Please keep checking our website and ticketmaster.com.

Back in May three shows (Chula Vista, and the two fall October dates) were removed from Margaritaville.com after having been announced with the spring and summer dates. The Toronto, Uncasville, and NYC shows were also removed at that time but were put back.

Buffett Sings at Cronkite Memorial

September 9th, 2009

This morning Jimmy Buffett spoke briefly and performed at a memorial service for his friend Walter Cronkite in New York City.

Before singing “Son of a Son of a Sailor”, Buffett told a quick story about Ed Bradley and Cronkite:

Buffett, recounting the anchor’s response when he asked, on behalf of pal Ed Bradley, for Walter’s blessing to wear an earring on 60 Minutes. “He said, ‘It doesn’t matter where he wears an earring as long as it was a good story,'” Buffett recalled. “But he said, ‘If I was going to wear an earring on 60 Minutes, I’d wear one of those big, long hanging ones.”

Here’s video of the performance. Jimmy was joined by Mac McAnally and Mickey Hart:
