Land Shark Stadium Is No More

January 18th, 2010

The naming rights to the Miami Dolphins’ home field have been sold again. The team is expected on Wednesday to announce a five-year deal with Canadian-based Sun Life Financial that will give the stadium its second name change in as many years.

The move was not unexpected. When the deal with Land Shark Lager, a Jimmy Buffett branded beer brewed by Anheuser-Busch, was signed last May, the parties made clear it was a one-year deal that would end at the conclusion of the Orange Bowl.

The deal with Sun Life is reportedly worth $7.5 million per year.

In May, Jimmy performed at a press event announcing the deal. He also played a show outside the stadium before the Monday Night game on September 21st when the Dolphins hosted the Colts.

Buffett Performs at Dolphins Press Conference

May 8th, 2009

This morning the Miami Dolphins made it official with a press conference and performance by Jimmy Buffett that culminated with the unveiling of the new logo for Landshark Stadium.

Buffett performed Margaritaville, Volcano, and then a special Dolphins version of Fins. Tickets to the event were given to local parrothead clubs and select Dolphins fans.

You can watch the entire event at MiamiDolphins.com

Update – Here are the lyrics to “Fins For The Fish”, a modified version of “Fins” that Jimmy sang at the press conference on Friday:

We drive down on Interstate 95
And up on U.S. 1
It’s game day in Miami town
Where the Dolphins are Number 1 (numero uno)
We play down by the ocean
In the warm South Florida sun
The tailgate’s down so gather round
For some pre-game LandShark fun.

Chorus
Can’t you feel us circlin’ Dolphfans
Can’t you feel us schoolin’ around?
We got fins to the left, fins to the right,
We’re at the only game in town
Oh Oh Oh Oh
We got fins to the left, fins to the right,
It’s the only game in town

From Lauderdale and Boca
Palm Beaches and the Florida Keys
It’s a game day mass migration
High fives fill the breeze
Kick off time’s approaching
We gotta shut off our cell phones
And get our arms up in the air
We are entering the “FinZone”

Chorus
Can’t you feel us circlin’ Dolphfans
Can’t you feel us swimmin’ around?
We got fins to the left, fins to the right,
We’re at the only game in town
Oh Oh Oh Oh
We got fins to the left, fins to the right,
It’s the only game in town

Logo for Landshark Stadium

May 7th, 2009

The Business of Sports blog at SunSentinel.com has a photo of the logo for the soon-to-be-named Landshark Stadium, which will be announced tomorrow at a press conference with Jimmy Buffett and Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross.

Sharp-eyed colleague Ted Hutton, who was covering Thursday’s Marlins-Atlanta Braves game, looked up about an hour after the game ended and saw the Dolphin Stadium scoreboard outfitted with the LandShark Stadium logo. He snapped this photo quickly – when he looked up again, the image was gone. In anticipation of Friday’s press conference in which Jimmy Buffett and Dolphins owner Stephen Ross are to announce a business deal that is to include the branding of the Dolphins’ home as LandShark Stadium for one season, enjoy.

Dolphin Stadium May Be Renamed “Landshark Stadium”

May 1st, 2009

The Miami Herald reports that Dolphins Stadium in Miami will likely complete a naming rights deal with Landshark Lager:

Dolphin Stadium, which has not had a corporate name since 2005, likely will complete a naming rights deal with Landshark Lager, a beer brewed by Anheuser-Busch, the stadium’s president said Friday morning.

The stadium could be renamed Landshark Stadium, though Dolphin Stadium president Bruce Schulze would not confirm the exact likely new name.

”We’ve been in conversations,” Schulze said, declining to comment further.

A second person close to the talks said the sides had discussed a short-term deal, perhaps only for one year or less, but the length remained under discussions. Dolphin Stadium will play host to the Super Bowl next February.

The beer is marketed as part of Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville brand. The Miami Herald reported Wednesday that Dolphins and stadium owner Stephen Ross has discussed opening a Margaritaville themed-area inside Dolphin Stadium, and the naming rights deal would fit within that plan.

Ross reportedly has approached Buffett about becoming a minority owner in the team, but Ross had not reached a deal with any minority partners as of earlier in the week, according to an official close to the owner.

Update – When Buffett was asked about it at Monday’s Hawks-Heat game, he said “You’re going to find out real soon. Real soon. It’s going to be great.”

A press conference to announce the deal could be held next week.
