Margaritaville Musical to be Produced

December 17th, 2015

It was a year ago that we told you about a musical in the works based on Jimmy Buffett’s life and music, and it was announced today that the project will indeed happen, and there are some big names on Broadway that are involved with the development.

A team of producers including Hollywood regular Frank Marshall is developing a new musical centered around the tunes of Jimmy Buffett, with a story by Greg Garcia, the creator of TV shows including “My Name Is Earl,” and Mike O’Malley (pictured with Garcia), whose face is familiar from acting gigs in “Glee” and “Yes, Dear,” another series created by Garcia.

Christopher Ashley, the director of Broadway Tony winner “Memphis” and the artistic director of the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, will direct. No plot details have yet been set, but the story will be inspired by the island-escape party vibe beloved by Parrotheads, as Buffet’s legion of fans call themselves. A title hasn’t been announced yet either, although it would seem a shocker if the show isn’t called “Margaritaville,” the name of one of Buffett’s best-known songs.

Marshall has teamed with Mindy Rich, Anita Waxman and Beth Williams, the lead producer of upcoming Broadway musical “Tuck Everlasting,” for the new musical. Buffett’s work seems a logical choice for a large-scale Broadway outing, since the the singer-songwriter comes to the table with fervent, older-skewing fans who fall right into the target demo for Broadway ticketbuyers.

The show’s proposed timeline has the musical bowing in 2017. No exact date or venue has been set, although the La Jolla Playhouse, the theater run by Ashley, looks like a logical choice for a pre-Broadway tryout.

Buffett to Hold Get-Out-The-Vote Rally for Florida Candidate

October 21st, 2014

Jimmy Buffett plans to hold a get-out-the-vote rally for Democratic candidate for Congress Gwen Graham on Wednesday, October 29th. Graham is the daughter of former Florida governor Bob Graham, whom Buffett started the Save the Manatees organization with in 1981.

Buffett is set to perform “a short acoustic set with his friend Mac McAnally” and tout Graham’s candidacy, according to a press release. More details are forthcoming about the time, location and ticket availability.

From the free media exposure to voter mobilization to fundraising, Buffett’s appearance for Graham is the type of star-power help most candidates dream about. Polling indicates the race between her and Southerland is tight in Congressional District 2, which stretches from the Tallahassee area to Panama City.

Nearly every election you can find Buffett hosting or playing at a fundraiser for Florida democratic candidates. Browse previous stories on Buffett and politics.

Buffett Was Pumped Up at Miami Heat Game

June 10th, 2014

Jimmy Buffett was at the American Airlines Arena in Miami on Tuesday night for game 3 of the NBA Finals between the Heat and the San Antonio Spurs. At one point in the game, a few celebrities in attendance were shown on the big screen and on the television broadcast, including an excited Jimmy.

The popular sports website SBnation.com, known for creating animated GIF’s (a looping animated image file, similar to a video) of sports-related moments, created one of Jimmy: “Jimmy Buffett is way too excited the Heat are losing”

Rick Ross gave a strong look. Lenny Kravitz smoldered. Jimmy Buffett did … this.

The man famous for that song they play at minor league baseball games had the camera on him for just a little too long during Game 3 on Tuesday night and things got a little weird.

Meanwhile, the Heat are wasting away again.

Here’s a Vine that shows a little bit more of Jimmy:

The Heat lost 111-92 and trail the Spurs two games to one in the Finals.
