Christmas Tornado Destroyed Studio Where Buffett Recorded

March 11th, 2013

AL.com has a great read on the destruction of a building in Mobile that was at one time a music studio where Buffett recorded some of his earliest stuff.

Jimmy Buffett is best known for his easy-going Key West lifestyle, but his musical roots began in Mobile inside a second-floor recording studio devastated by a Christmas Day tornado.

The studio’s building was torn down on Thursday, and rubble is being cleared from what had long been Cantrell’s photography studio at 1916 Airport Blvd., in an area referred to as “The Loop” where Airport, Government Street and Dauphin Island Parkway converge.

While it has not been occupied by a sound studio for decades, the location had become a popular sight-seeing stop for devoted “Parrot heads,” or loyalists to Buffett’s music. It was inside the studio where Buffett recorded his first songs.

“I could run (the studio) from 11 to 2 (a.m.) and during that three-hour period, we’d demo 10 songs,” Brown said. “That is unheard of today. I only had about seven of those songs ready to go and Jimmy was, by then, a good friend. I said, ‘hey, do you want to record some of yours?’ Jimmy said, ‘yeah, I want to do that.'”

Buffett, in the late 60s, was performing at the Admiral’s Corner at the Admiral Semmes Hotel in downtown Mobile.

“They were paying him $10 a night and he could put out a tip jar,” Brown said. “He wanted to get back (to work) so he didn’t lose that job.”

Said Thompson: “He was just one man with a guitar and a stool. He had not gotten the persona as the guy from Key West, yet.”

It was at Product Sound Studio where Buffett recorded two songs, “Don’t Bring Me Candy” and “Abandon On Tuesday.” Those two songs were released in 1970, but were not part of Buffett’s debut album, “Down to Earth.”

Buffett’s Yacht Now Available for Charter

February 9th, 2013

How would you like to charter Jimmy Buffett’s personal yacht, the Continental Drifter III? Well now you can, albeit it at a deserved steep price. The 124 foot luxury boat goes for $65,000 per week, plus expenses.

The luxurious yacht, can accommodate up to 10 guests in 5 staterooms, all with their own ensuite bathrooms. With a professional crew of 6, including a first class chef and a full compliment of “toys” – 30’ RIB fishing/diving/waterskiing shore excursion boat, paddleboards, surfboards, fishing gear and lots of memorabilia.

The yacht is small enough to get into small secluded coves and anchorages, where larger vessels can’t go and yet is very sea kindly, in large part due to her “Zero Speed” stabilization system, which also makes “rolly” anchorages a pleasure, so one can watch the sunset and not spill the Margaritas!

She is equipped with the latest equipment, including over 400 movies and thousands of songs on hard drive, satellite TV and high speed internet for those that can’t “un-tether”. She even has a 50” drop down TV on the flybridge with a large “daybed” so you can snuggle up and watch your favorite movies under the stars, while feeling the warm Caribbean breeze!

You can also charter Jimmy’s Cessna Caravan floatplane! One of the cool things that Buffett suggests you can do with the yacht and plane is to motor west through the Panama Canal, play in the Pacific Ocean and then fly over to the Atlantic side… swimming in both oceans in the same day.

Jimmy Appears with Warren Buffett at Student Luncheon

April 17th, 2012

While Jimmy Buffett was in Omaha last week he made a surprise appearance at a luncheon for college students hosted by Warren Buffett.

At the luncheon a “reserved” sign was posted across from Buffett and in between Schumacher and Inschauspe. Buffett excused himself from the UW table to address the entire luncheon crowd, announcing, “This has all been a setup. I am not the real Buffett.”

To the surprise of the crowd, in walked Jimmy Buffett, a close personal friend of the other Buffett.

With guitar in hand, Jimmy Buffett went to the end of the UW students’ table, put one foot up on a chair and broke into “Smart Woman (In a Real Short Skirt)” followed by “Margaritaville,” the song that made him famous.

“During lunch, we heard a few stories from their friendship, and learned that out of curiosity, they’ve checked through DNA tests to see if they were related — they’re not,” Schumacher says.

“It was so awesome to have Jimmy Buffett playing two feet in front of us and, on top of that, to sit right next to him and right across from Warren Buffett at lunch,” Inschauspe says. “By far, one of the best experiences in my life.”
