Jimmy Visits His Hometown of Pascagoula

December 8th, 2014

After making a surprise appearance at Tipitina’s in New Orleans on Saturday, and taking in the Saints game on Sunday, Jimmy Buffett headed to his birthplace on Monday: Pascagoula, Mississippi.

From GulfLive.com:

The Pascagoula native was in New Orleans over the weekend, and rented a car with longtime friend Franz Hanning and drove from the Big Easy down highway 90 and into Jackson County and had lunch at Scranton’s in Pascagoula. Hanning is also a Pascaoula native and is the brother-in-law of Scranton’s co-owner Jack Pickett.

“I got a call about 10 Sunday night that they might be coming,” Richard Chenoweth, also a Scranton’s co-owner, said. “They were supposed to be there at 11, and I didn’t tell anyone but my daughter Amy (the manager of Scranton’s) and I didn’t tell her until right around 11. They walked in about 10 minutes later.”

“He’s a great guy, really laid back,” Chenoweth added. “We just talked about the Saints, and fishing and food and family. I think everyone really enjoyed it. It was real casual. They just wanted to stop in their hometown and have a bite to eat.”

Chenoweth said the group dined on Bang-Bang Shrimp and chicken gumbo among other fare, and Buffett had a turkey burger.

“We had a pretty good lunch crowd that early, and no one really realized it was him,” Chenoweth concluded. “It turned out real well.”

Lucy Buffett to Open Second Restaurant in Destin

September 12th, 2014

news_luludestinMany of you have visited Jimmy Buffett’s sister Lucy’s restaurant in Gulf Shores, Alabama, and in 2015 she’ll open a second Lulu’s… this one in Destin, Florida.

Lucy “LuLu” Buffett, owner of LuLu’s at Homeport Marina, recently announced her plan to open a second LuLu’s location in Destin in a low-key way, via Facebook. She posted: “Uh, did I forget to mention…” along with a photo of a sign at the new spot. “Keep calm and eat gumbo,” the sign reads. “Destin 2015.”

Buffett’s new venture will be located close to her brother Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, which opened in Destin in February of this year. The siblings grew up in Mobile.

The new LuLu’s in Destin will be similar in size and atmosphere to the one in Gulf Shores, according to a spokeswoman for Buffett. The restaurant will be at the base of the Mid-Bay Bridge next to Legendary Marine, overlooking the Choctawhatchee Bay, according to a letter from Buffett on the LuLu’s website.

“I always thought the Florida Panhandle would be the perfect place for another LuLu’s,” she wrote. “We’ve had many offers to open one in other places, but it never quite seemed to be the right time or place. I’d always muse, ‘I will one day, when…'”

If all goes to plan, Buffett’s “one day” will happen sometime next year.

Buffett Purchases Beverly Hills Home

June 18th, 2014

According to Variety, Jimmy Buffett has purchased a home in Beverly Hills, California for $8.25 million.

news_bevhillshome

The two-time Grammy nominee and his longtime second missus, Jane, have long owned multi-million dollar homes and compounds in Palm Beach (FL), the Hamptons (NY), and St. Barts and, in April of this year, they quietly shelled out $8.25 million for a freshly and fastidiously rehabbed mid-century minded pied-a-terre in the Trousdale estates area of Beverly Hills.*

The seller, according to all the various property record data bases Your Mama consulted, was Hollywood theatrical marketing guru Matt Brubaker (of Trailer Park) who acquired the property from a non-celebrity couple in late December 2012 for $5.8 million. A look back over digital listings from the time Mister Brubaker bought the property show he gave the interiors a thorough cosmetic overhaul and flipped it back on the market in the early days of 2014 with an asking price of $8.399 million.

Originally built in 1963, the single-story home sits behinds a stainless steel gate that slides open to a teeny-weeny motor court and side-facing two-car attached garage with stainless steel doors. Another stainless steel gate opens from the motor court to a walled entry courtyard where a long and shallow water channel must be crossed in order to get to the all-glass front door. (It is just Your Mama who finds stainless steel driveway gates and garage doors to be an impressively expensive if depressingly passé, turn-of-the-21st-century architectural conceit?)
