Galveston Loves Buffett

July 17th, 2006

The Galveston County Daily News has an article on Buffett being the winner when residents were asked “If Galveston were a famous person, who would it be, and why?”

Topping the list of responses was — drum roll, please — Jimmy Buffett, the laid-back singer who has made a fortune selling CDs to his legion of baby boomer fans known as Parrotheads, singing oddball ditties about drinking, hamburgers and hanging around the beach.

Bids for Buffett plates rolling

July 13th, 2006

The Augusta Chronicle has an article on the South Carolina Parrothead License Plates:

Jimmy Buffett fans have months to wait until South Carolina’s Parrothead license plates are available. But through Saturday, the rights to the first 10 are being auctioned. The high bid for license plate “JB 1” – aka, the No. 1 Jimmy Buffett fan – is $1,000. Other plates range from $50 to $175.

The plates themselves are still being designed. A representative from Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville company has drawn three designs, which are still being tweaked. After a final design is chosen, there must be 400 orders for the license plates for the Department of Motor Vehicles to produce them.

“I think the first 350 are going to go like hotcakes,” said Venning Morrison, the president of the Palmetto Parrothead Club. “And then we might actually have to advertise.”

To place a bid, visit www.scphlp.org.

The auction ends at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Article on Warren and Jimmy Buffett

June 28th, 2006

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has an article on Warren Buffett that contains a section about him and Jimmy: “All about Buffett — Warren, not Jimmy”

He is not believed to be related to musician Jimmy Buffett. But Warren’s sister, Doris, has tried for 20 years to find a genetic link. Jimmy calls him “Uncle Warren” and Warren calls him “Cousin Jimmy.”

They did travel together in 1983 to Norfolk Island in the South Pacific, which has a large population of Buffetts, who are descendants of men who participated in the 1789 mutiny aboard the HMS Bounty.

And Cousin Jimmy wrote a 2003 song having to do with Uncle Warren. Part of the ditty goes, “I bought Berkshire way back when it was cheap. I bought Berkshire way back then and I do nothing but keep…it.”

Berkshire Hathaway, a diversified company with major interests in GEICO, life insurance, annuities and jewelry, is Uncle Warren’s company. Subsidiaries include Fruit of the Loom, Dairy Queen, See’s Candies, Borsheim’s Fine Jewelry and World Book. Its 2005 net income was $8.5 billion.

Cousin Jimmy bought his first shares in 1989. As of Monday, the stock was selling at about $91,500 per share. The per-share price dropped $600 that day on news of Uncle Warren’s largess.
