The natives are restless in Cayman

September 28th, 2007

According to Cayman Net News, the Margaritaville Cafe on Grand Cayman that opened in 2006 recently had its liquor license put on probation because of complaints from a neighboring church.

Elmslie Memorial United Church objected to the renewal of Margaritaville’s licenses claiming the establishment is “a bad influence” and that the owners, Dart Realty, should apply the same principles here that they apply to the upscale Camana Bay development.

Renard Moxam, Managing Director of Island Companies, and part-owner of Margaritaville, responded that there were no objections to the initial application by Margaritaville, and that to be asked to modify the license was problematic. Margaritaville has been in operation for over a year, and apart from a couple of incidents that were acted upon, the establishment felt there are no grounds for objections.

Article on Buffett honoring Flora-Bama owner

September 27th, 2007

The Alabama Press-Register has an article on Buffett honoring the owner of the gulf coast bar The Flora-Bama at one of the Madison Square Garden shows: “Buffett honors Gilchrist; benefit set for Joiner”

When Jimmy Buffett opened last year’s “Take the Weather with You” album with the song “Bama Breeze,” an ode to a fondly remembered coastal roadhouse, many took it as a thinly veiled tribute to the famed Flora-Bama Lounge & Package on the Alabama-Florida state line.

It’s probably fair to say that Buffett was deliberate in sending a more general message. When he used the Katrina-damaged Fire Dog Saloon in Bay St. Louis, Miss., as the site of the song’s video, he also worked in a theme of destruction and recovery that was relevant to life all along the Gulf Coast.

But Buffett was more direct in tipping his hat last week during a concert in New York City’s Madison Square Garden. Flora-Bama owner Joe Gilchrist was in the crowd, along with a small group of friends with Gulf Coast ties, and Buffett singled both Gilchrist and the Flora-Bama out by name as sources of inspiration.

Buffett volunteers in the surf with Autistic kids

September 20th, 2007

Jimmy Buffett spent some time this past weekend volunteering in Montauk with Surfers Healing, a organization created specifically to take autistic children out of their mysterious shells, and to turn a beach here, a beach there, into a sanctuary of shared understanding for moms and dads who most days struggle alone to cope with their challenged children in the “normal” world.

“It’s the motion of the ocean,” was how the singer Jimmy Buffett put it. Mr. Buffett, a surfer himself, showed up to volunteer on Saturday afternoon. Later that evening, he performed for parents and volunteers at the Sunset Saloon on Fort Pond Bay in Montauk.

Buffett attends star-studded party at Bon Jovi’s home

September 3rd, 2007

Over the weekend, Jimmy Buffett attended a celebrity-studded Labor Day party at Bon Jovi’s Long Island, New York home, according to a couple articles:

The New York Post writes:

Guests at Bon Jovi’s Labor Day party were screaming and cheering when an impromptu band made up of Billy Joel (below) on piano, Jimmy Buffett on guitar and Jon Bon Jovi, Paul McCartney and Pink Floyd great Roger Waters on vocals took the stage.

The rock legends played Bon Jovi and Beatle tunes, along with many of Billy’s own songs.

The New York Daily News has more:

The surf-and-turf dinner would have been enough for a crowd that included Renee Zellwegger, Naomi Watts, Howard Stern, “Today” anchor Matt Lauer, designer Donna Karan, New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine, Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner and “Saturday Night Live” producer Lorne Michaels.
