New Buffett Album out Dec. 8th

October 17th, 2009

Amazon has listed the new Jimmy Buffett album “Buffet Hotel”. The release date is December 8th.

No other details are available from Amazon, but we have more information here.

We expect the album to include the following songs that have been played on tour the last two years:

  • We’re Still Here
  • A Lot to Drink About
  • Surfing in a Hurricane
  • Summerzcool
  • Buffet Hotel
  • Wings

The title of the new album (and song) were conceived during a trip to the “Festival in the Desert,” a music festival that takes place annually near Timbuktu, Mali. It was there that Jimmy ran across a place called “Buffet Hotel,” somewhere that Jimmy describes as a “train station-slash-whorehouse.”

From Under My Lone Palm: Somewhere Over China

October 13th, 2009

This month marks one year that Justin has been writing his From Under My Lone Palm columns. We hope that you’ve enjoyed reading them.

Justin writes about the “Somewhere Over China” album in this month’s column:

On January 19, 1982, “Somewhere Over China,” Jimmy’s new release, hit your favorite record store. The album represented a critical point in Jimmy’s career-”Margaritaville” was 5 years ago, and MCA was looking for the next hit single. Sure, Jimmy had been able to score minor hits in-between, but the window for Jimmy being a superstar was getting smaller with each album it seemed. It wasn’t all Jimmy’s fault-as he once put it, “Music changed on us almost overnight, and the singer/songwriter breed who populated the music scene of the seventies seemed to be headed for the proverbial “elephant burial ground.” While chart success hadn’t been there, touring had alaways been a strong point for Jimmy, and that was something that hadn’t changed. Jimmy’s cult following continued to flock to shows and Jimmy continued to please them by playing over 300 shows a year. But this constant cyle of no hit records and lots of touring had begun to wear on the band, and it showed in Jimmy’s writing on the album.

Article on Buffett’s New Album

July 8th, 2009

We’ve told you that a new Jimmy Buffett album is in the works. The Examiner has an article on the upcoming release:

When Jimmy Buffett says it’s always five o’clock somewhere, you better believe he means it. In fact, he traveled all the way to Timbuktu to have happy hour with a group of nomadic Tuareg musicians at the Festival in the Desert, an annual gathering in Africa.

It was here that he gained inspiration to start writing, which would end up becoming his newest album that is slated for release by the end of the year. Buffett hasn’t had a new album since 2006, and says that the reason for this new burst of creative energy is because his trek to Africa was one of the best musical experiences of his life. This inspiration is paired up with his point of view on the current recession, intertwining his usual upbeat outlook with some satire and sarcasm.

For example, the two most popular new songs are “A Lot To Drink About”, (which has lyrics about Madoff taking off with money) and “Surfing in a Hurricane”. The names describe the current economical state perfectly, and Buffett feels it’s the perfect way to appeal to his long-standing loyal fans.

Buffett in Nashville Recording Studio Today

June 10th, 2009

Jimmy Buffett is in Nashville recording music according to singer/songwriter Tommy Womack’s Facebook:

Tommy Womack: I just spent an hour in a recording studio watching Jimmy Buffet record my song. God is good.

This gives more credence to Nadirah Shakoor’s tweet that Jimmy will be at the Bonnaroo Music Festival on Saturday since this puts him within 70 miles of the venue.

There was no mention of what song was recorded.
