Final Cheeseburger in Paradise Closes

October 1st, 2020

The lone operating Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurant in Secaucus, New Jersey has closed its doors. The restaurant chain, founded by Jimmy Buffett and OSI Partners in 2002, reached a peak in 2006 with 38 locations in 17 states.

The first Cheeseburger in Paradise opened 2002 in Indianapolis. It was co-owned by Jimmy Buffett, whose famous song inspired the restaurant, and OSI Restaurant Partners (now Bloomin’ Brands). In 2009, Cheeseburger in Paradise was taken over by Paradise Restaurant Group, LLC.

In 2012, Luby’s purchased the brand for $11 million; there were 23 locations across 14 states. Even then, the brand faced financial issues. Lisa Lee, vice president of brand and marketing strategy for Luby’s Fuddruckers Restaurants, told the North Jersey Record at the time that Cheeseburger in Paradise was “already challenged when we purchased it in 2012 and continued to face headwinds since. We had to make a tough decision to close underperforming locations.”

At peak in 2006, the concept spread to 38 units across 17 states.

By August 2015, there were eight Cheeseburger in Paradise units. By July 2018, there were three locations remaining. An Indianapolis store closed in August of that year and an Omaha, Nebraska, unit shuttered in October. During Luby’s Q1 2019 earnings call, CEO Chris Pappas referred to the last Cheeseburger in Paradise as profitable and said it wasn’t dragging on the P&L. Since then, Luby’s has continued to face worsening sales and the global pandemic only made matters worse.

Buffett and McAnally Inducted into Mississippi Songwriters Hall of Fame

September 21st, 2020

Jimmy Buffett and longtime Coral Reefer Band member Mac McAnally have both been inducted into the Mississippi Songwriters Hall of Fame:

Some of the best musicians were supposed to gather this week in Ocean Springs. But, like so many other things, the 2020 Mississippi Songwriter’s Festival was canceled due to COVID-19.

The cancellation didn’t stop the Hall of Fame ceremony though; it went on virtually on Thursday night.

Pascagoula Mayor Steve Demetropoulos, welcomed the city’s famous musician into the esteemed club, Jimmy Buffett.

“It’s been said that Mississippi is the birth place of America’s music, well Jimmy Buffett is America’s music.” said Demetropoulos.

Before performing on some of the world’s biggest stages, Jimmy Buffett called Pascagoula home. In a recorded message, Buffett reflected on how the Mississippi Coast shaped his iconic music career.

“It’s a long way from the Pascagoula run and my early days growing up in Mississippi certainly had an impact on the way I wrote songs and what I wrote about,” said Buffet. “So, thank you Mississippi for that.”

Jimmy Buffett Joins Eli Young Band for ‘Saltwater Gospel’

August 21st, 2020

The Eli Young Band has recruited Jimmy Buffett for a ‘Fins up version’ of their song “Saltwater Gospel”:

Originally released in 2016, the song was never a major hit at country radio, but lead singer Mike Eli says he always thought this song stood out.

“We’d always known from the early days of playing ‘Saltwater Gospel’ live that it was special. Crowds would sing along as if it was already a huge hit. Our team noticed a massive swell of streaming recently and some radio stations began playing it again. With signs there was more life to this song, the idea of re-releasing a fresh version was really exciting for us to explore,” he explains. “We aimed high thinking how cool it would be to have Jimmy Buffett, but finding out he was interested, we were pumped! He’s an icon who’s made a huge impact on the world with fans completely devoted to his persona and laidback party environment. Plus, he likes a drink now and then, and so do we.”
