Sun News Article on Buffett’s M’Ville Show

May 5th, 2006

The Sun News has an article on Buffett’s concert on Thursday night at the Margaritaville in Myrtle Beach:

A couple of hundred VIPs with free passes and lucky fans who won their way in saw Buffett’s hour-long performance. The singer was backed by a scaled-down version of the Coral Reefer Band at an intimate gig the popular musician – who sells out 20,000-seat stadiums – typically doesn’t play.

Buffett glided onto the restaurant’s small stage at 5:15 p.m. for the “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” show and launched into “The Wino And I Know.”

“I can’t think of the last time I played a cocktail hour show,” Buffett said, wearing khaki shorts, a blue button-up shirt, aviator shades and a white cap.

Buffett played the songs the fans expected to hear, including “Come Monday,” “Son of a Son of a Sailor,” “Cheeseburger in Paradise” and, of course, the closer, “Margaritaville.”

The crowd sang along, chanting “Salt, Salt, Salt” at just the right moment in “Margaritaville” and clamping their hands together above their heads during “Fins.”

Buffett chatted with the small crowd between songs, commenting on the restaurant’s scenery, the lighthouse outside over his right shoulder and the flags hanging behind the stage.

“Thank God they spelled my name right,” he said jokingly about the signs.

Jimmy in USA Today

May 3rd, 2006

USA Today has an article on Jimmy Buffett and Hoot author Carl Hiassen.

For Buffett, who is always looking to do something new, movie producing was a matter of “seeing if I could pull it off.” He and Hiaasen go back 25 years. Three years ago, Buffett remembers getting Hoot for his daughter, Delaney, who loved it. So he bought the rights.

Buffett has dabbled in films through the years, playing bit parts and hoping to get one of his novels made into a movie, but nothing has worked. He says “several people” turned down Hoot before the Walden Media production company got involved. But he didn’t give up.

“I remember being turned down by 20 record companies,” he says. “They turn down 99% of the stuff. Who knows?”

What he learned, he says, was that it’s not easy to shepherd a movie. “It’s ruled by committee out there, and I had a big problem with that. I taught myself some lessons in patience.”

Does Hoot mean he’s getting into kids’ stuff?

“I’ve always been into kids,” Buffett says with a laugh. “Children of all ages. Hoot is just Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn and Becky Thatcher. That’s all. I think Mr. Twain would like this movie. “
