Buffett to Play Belly Up San Diego

March 22nd, 2017

Jimmy Buffett announced today a surprise show at the Belly Up in San Diego on Tuesday, March 28th:

History does repeat, at least when it comes to Jimmy Buffett and the Belly Up.

The tropical-pop troubadour and his band, The Coral Reefers, will perform at the Belly Up Tuesday as a warm-up date for their April 1 concert at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Tickets go on sale at noon today, Thursday, online only.

In 2013, Buffett and his band played at the 600-seat Belly Up as a warm-up date for their subsequent show at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

All tickets are priced at $95, plus service charges. They will be available only online through frontgatetickets.com.

This will be Buffett’s third San Diego concert in barely seven months.

Last September, he and the Coral Reefers drew an overflow crowd to their opening night performance at the 2016 KAABOO Del Mar festival.

He and his band returned in October for their first show at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay since 1984. It, too, sold out in an instant and drew an audience that included San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and his wife, Katherine.

No Show at Alpine Valley This Year

March 17th, 2017

Alpine Valley Music Theatre has been a staple of Jimmy Buffett’s touring for years, but it was announced on Friday that the amphitheater will not host any concerts in 2017 after many regulars opted to play other area venues this summer.

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

There was a time when Alpine Valley Music Theatre was among the most elite music venues in the nation.

In its prime in 1989, the East Troy amphitheater hosted some of the biggest acts in the world: the Rolling Stones and the Who and the Grateful Dead and Metallica. The Dead played 20 shows there in the ’80s, and Pearl Jam brought its 20th-anniversary festival to Alpine in 2011.

But for its 40th anniversary year this summer, the 27,100-capacity Alpine Valley won’t host a single concert. It will be closed for an entire season for the first time in its history.

Jon Reens, vice president of marketing for Midwest music for Live Nation, which manages Alpine, said the usual acts that swing through Alpine chose to play different venues instead.

“We started in the middle of 2016 working on the 2017 calendar. We went and discussed with a multitude of artists about playing the building for the first time in their careers, and it was met with universal acclaim,” Reens said. “It just didn’t work out. Artists wanted to play different venues. There was a definite desire with some of the artists to play stadiums. And in some cases, the production didn’t fit in the building.”
