Jimmy Buffett 2017 Year in Review

As another new year rings in, let’s take a look back at what happened in Margaritaville this past year.

January

  • Jimmy made another cameo appearance on the CBS show ‘Hawaii Five-O’
  • The Cubs visited the White House to celebrate their World Series championship and Jimmy was in attendance
  • In late January, Jimmy performed at the opening of the Margaritaville Casino in Tulsa

February

  • About half of Jimmy’s 2017 tour dates were announced in the month of February
  • It was announced that a Margaritaville retirement community is planned for Daytona, Florida

March

  • The dreaded news dropped in March that Buffett would not play Alpine Valley in 2017
  • Buffett warmed up for the 2017 tour with a show at the Belly Up in San Diego
  • The first Margaritaville in California opened at the end of March in LA’s Universal City Walk and Jimmy performed at the opening

April

  • Jimmy opened the 2017 I Don’t Know Tour in Las Vegas on April Fools Day
  • With announcements of Margaritaville retirement homes, our annual April Fools joke was that Buffett would open a chain of Margaritaville Funeral Homes, with the first across the street from the Margaritaville retirement homes
  • Buffett headed Down Under where he played shows in Australia and New Zealand
  • Buffett played shows in Las Vegas, Byron Bay, Wellington, and Christchurch

May

  • At Jazz Fest in early May, Jimmy joined Dave Matthews on stage during his set
  • Escape to Margaritaville the musical debuted at La Jolla Playhouse
  • Buffett played shows in Charleston, Orlando, West Palm Beach, Virginia Beach, and Bristow

June

  • One Particular Harbour and Marina in Bradenton is announced
  • Buffett played shows in Tampa, Orange Beach, Houston, and Frisco

July

  • It’s announced that Tan-Tar-A Resort in Lake of the Ozarks will be rebranded as a Margaritaville resort
  • ‘Escape to Margaritaville’ the musical moves to Chicago
  • Buffett played shows in St Louis, Cincinnati, Detroit, and at Wrigley Field

August

  • Forbes detailed Buffett’s business empire, finding that Margaritaville generates $1.5 billion in annual sales and has $4.8 billion in the development pipeline
  • Jimmy boarded an ocean research vessel off the coast of Montauk, NY and one of the sharks they tag is named JD after Jimmy’s grandfather
  • Buffett played shows in Toronto, Wantagh, Camden, and Mansfield

September

  • Jimmy appeared as himself on an episode of NCIS: New Orleans with Scott Bakula
  • Buffett appeared on The Today Show to talk about ‘Escape to Margaritaville’ the musical and also discussed what to do with your wedding ring and photos from a previous marriage
  • Buffett made his annual trek to Paris, playing three shows at La Cigale

October

  • Buffett played shows in Vancouver, Eugene, San Francisco, and San Diego

November

  • Buffett played a show in Honolulu
  • Mac McAnally won CMA Musician of the Year for the ninth time
  • Lin Manuel Miranda joined Jimmy onstage at the ‘Escape to Margaritaville’ musical in Chicago
  • It was announced that Jimmy and The Eagles would team up for stadium shows in 2018
  • Mac McAnally suffered a heart attack in mid-November
  • Buffett films scenes for upcoming movie ‘The Beach Bum’ with Matthew McConaughey
  • Jimmy, Kenny Chesney, and Toby Keith play a hurricane relief benefit show in Tallahassee
  • Buffett releases ‘Buried Treasure’, a collection of previously unreleased songs from his early days

December

  • Buffett hands out burgers at the Broadway box office opening for ‘Escape to Margaritaville’

  • Buffett played at the Margaritaville Key West where recent Alabama senator-elect Doug Jones was in attendance
  • Jimmy turned 71 years old on Christmas Day
  • Buffett plays a New Years Eve show in Nashville

Buffett Plays New Years Eve Show in Nashville

Jimmy Buffett rang in the New Year in Nashville with a show at the Bridgestone Arena on Sunday night.

View the set list from the show here. A highlight was the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” after the ball dropped at midnight in Nashville.

Buffett Performs at Key West Margaritaville

Jimmy Buffett performed at his Margaritaville restaurant in Key West on Saturday night, and new senator-elect Doug Jones from Alabama was in the house:

Alabama’s new U.S. Senator-elect got a special serenade from one of its favorite sons.

Doug Jones was in Key West, Florida this weekend with his wife, Louise, to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. During the visit, the couple visited the Margaritaville restaurant where they we recognized by owner and entertainer Jimmy Buffet, a native of Mobile.
The singer serenaded the couple with his version of “Stars Fell on Alabama,” according to Politico, which first reported the encounter.
