Atlantic City Margaritaville Casino won’t open til next summer

June 5th, 2008

Last week it was announced that Jimmy Buffett has bought the Trump Marina Hotel Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The Patriot News reports that the casino won’t open as Margaritaville until at least next summer:

The sale of the Marina is expected to take six to nine months and will require approval by the New Jersey Casino Control Commission.

That means Parrotheads, the devoted fans of Buffett and the laid-back beach lifestyle made famous by “Margaritaville,” won’t see the new property until at least next summer.

Buffett “in no hurry” to make new album

June 4th, 2008

Billboard has an interview with Jimmy Buffett: “Buffett Busy With Live DVD, Tour, Kids Book”. He talks about how he’s been writing songs, but is not in any hurry to put out a new album:

Buffett is developing albums for younger artists, including Coral Reefer Band backup singer Nadirah Shakoor, for his Mailboat label. And his Year of Still Here Tour starts tomorrow at Lakewood Amphitheatre in Atlanta.

As for that next album, the follow-up to 2006’s “Take the Weather With You,” Buffett says that “the time it takes to write a book kind of produces an offshoot of you [wanting] to go back to something else.”

He adds that he’s been “listening to different things that inspire me musically, but I’m in no hurry to do (an album). I am writing songs; it’ll be interesting to see if I wait and get a collection of 12 of them together to do an album or go do four and put ’em online or something. The delivery systems now … it’s very interesting how you can put stuff out there, so we’ll see what feels like the best way to do it.”

Play “Rock Band” in Atlanta parking lot

June 3rd, 2008

Parrotheads tailgating before the show on Thursday at the Lakewood Amphitheater in Atlanta, Georgia will have a chance to rock out to Buffett’s song on a portable version of “Rock Band” mounted to a golf cart:

The second part of Jimmy Buffett’s tour kicks off in Atlanta June 5. The singer has called on Meridian’s Peavey Electronics to add a little excitement to it.

Peavey makes the game controllers for the popular electronic guitar games and Buffett asked the company to make one for ‘Rock Band’, a game that features several of his songs.

Instead of a standard game controller, Buffett wanted this one to be on a golf cart.

“I’m going to look forward to seeing his face when he sees it in Atlanta Thursday. We’ve had a ball doing it and it pretty much speaks for himself,” said company founder Hartley Peavey.

“Jimmy’s Sharkart”, as it will be called, will be on hand before the concert, as fans tailgate. They’ll get a shot at a high score, and a chance to meet Buffett.

Buffett Dismisses Retiring Any Time Soon

June 3rd, 2008

In an interview with United Press International, Buffett dismisses the notion of retiring any time soon:

“I’m still out there — where would I go? Retirement doesn’t look so interesting to me these days,” says Buffett, 61, who kicks off his Year of Still Here tour Thursday in Atlanta.

“That’s kind of an old way of thinking, retiring at 60. Come on — I still think I’m 40!” he said.
