“There are always welcome breaks in every storm, but the unfortunate reality is that this disaster is not going away for a while,” Buffett said. “But a few hours of fun, void of the constant reminders of the situation, is a good thing, and that is basically what I do.”

“I thank Jimmy Buffett and these other great artists for coming to perform on Alabama’s coast,” said Alabama Gov. Bob Riley. “Their music will lift up spirits and help encourage visitors to come here and enjoy our world famous Southern hospitality.”

“Music has healing powers, and who better than Jimmy and friends to summon them up?” said CMT president Brian Philips. “It is CMT’s privilege to present this special. We send a message to the people of the Gulf Coast that our audience — and the world — stands beside them.”

CMT Presents Jimmy Buffett & Friends Live From the Gulf Coast is produced by the State of Alabama, the City of Gulf Shores, CMT, Live Nation and Land Shark Lager. Local promotional services are provided by Mobile-based Huka Entertainment.

CMT Presents Jimmy Buffett & Friends Live From The Gulf Coast will encore July 2 at 7 p.m., July 3 at 9:30 a.m., July 4 at 2 p.m. and July 5 at 11:30 a.m. Excerpts and artist interviews will be available at CMT.com.

According to Ticketmaster, the concert will be held at the Gulf Shores Public Beach, 101 E. Beach Blvd., Gulf Shores, AL 36542.

Gift-Wrapped Buffett Speaks and Performs at Prep School

June 11th, 2010

A couple weeks ago Jimmy Buffett spoke at the Lawrenceville School, a private boarding school near Princeton, New Jersey:

The Lawrenceville School’s gift to students in the days before their summer break quite literally arrived on the Kirby Arts Center stage yesterday with a gift-wrapped box on his head. A more appropriate present there never was, for beneath the festive packaging was famed singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett, a fellow who knows how to start a summer off right. Buffett entertained the whooping, cheering crowd with hilarious anecdotes of his life on the road — and also delivered on his promise to tell a story or two that would make his daughter’s face “as red as her shirt.”

“Fun has to be a part of life,” he said in his iconic drawl. “And I’m fortunate to have made a career out of it.”

As a young man, Buffett took a little while to figure out what he wanted to do with his life, “But I did know that I wanted to get the hell out of Mobile, Alabama.” He learned a few guitar chords in college (to impress girls) and, after some ups and downs, this “child of Mardi Gras” established himself a fun-loving performer that knew how to make audiences walk away happy. “Your relationship with the audience is about what they want to hear, not about what you want to play,” he told the students. “There are eight or nine songs I have to play or they’ll kill me.”

He urged the crowd to live life to its fullest and see the world in person rather than through the glow of a computer monitor. Then, after a lively Q&A that riffed on everything from buying a boat in lieu of an insurance policy to his relationship with Santa Claus, Buffett, launched into a rousing rendition of a few of his iconic songs.

Mac McAnally also joined Buffett for a couple songs.

Check out a photo gallery from the appearance on Lawrenceville School’s Facebook page.

Buffett Performs at Event for Michael Douglas

May 25th, 2010

Jimmy Buffett and his wife Jane were on hand in New York City on Monday night at an event to mark the achievements of actor Michael Douglas:

[Douglas] was awarded the 37th annual Chaplin Award by the Film Society of Lincoln Centre for his work both in front of the camera as an actor and behind the scenes as a producer.

And, in an poignant moment, he was presented the coveted award by his father, acting legend Kirk Douglas who is 93 years of age.

The Film Society’s Annual Gala began in 1972 and honoured Charles Chaplin, who returned to the US from exile to accept the commendation.

Since then, the award was renamed for Chaplin, and has honoured many of the film industry’s most notable talents, including Alfred Hitchcock, Billy Wilder, Laurence Olivier, Federico Fellini, Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Davis, James Stewart, Robert Altman, Martin Scorsese, Diane Keaton, Meryl Streep and most recently, Tom Hanks.

Guest presenters included friends and previous collaborators such as Steven Soderbergh, Tobey Maguire, Danny DeVito, Erika Christensen and Barbara Walters.

A special music performance [was] provided by singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett, a long-time friend of Douglas, who also performed at the actor’s wedding to Catherine Zeta Jones.
