Jimmy Drops by Wyndham Championship

August 16th, 2016

Jimmy Buffett jetted into Greensboro, NC on Monday and played one song at the temporary Margaritaville bar that was set up at the Wyndham Championship golf tournament:

The crowd gathered a little before 4 p.m. in the hot, open-air Margaritaville bar set up in front of Sedgefield Country Club’s stately Tudor clubhouse for the Wyndham Championship.

A few hundred people listened and sang along with “20 Ride,” a Zac Brown tribute band from Charlotte. But they were waiting for more. Word was out: Jimmy Buffett would visit this temporary bar based on his chain of 24 permanent Margaritavilles in the U.S., Mexico and Carribean.

“He just popped in,” Wyndham tournament director Mark Brazil said. “He and the (executives) from Wyndham have gotten to be good friends. … He wanted to come out and see this Margaritaville because he’s seen the Wyndham beach on TV, and he wanted to get a look at what we’re doing. He was pretty blown away by it all.”

It was a whirlwind trip, a pit-stop in the middle of a longer trip, and Buffett was in Greensboro for less than two hours.

At last Buffett came out of the clubhouse and into the heat, ambling toward the stage. It was 5 o’clock. Of course. Because it’s always 5 o’clock somewhere.

Buffett was dressed for business: light blue shorts, a pink polo shirt, and battered blue Converse Chuck Taylor sneakers with no laces. His curly gray hair poked out from beneath a white Navy Sailing baseball cap, his eyes hidden behind gold-framed aviator sunglasses with dark brown lenses.

Buffett Surprises at The Ryman in Nashville

February 9th, 2016

Jimmy Buffett was a surprise guest at The Ryman in Nashville on Saturday, teaming up with Jenny Lewis on a cover of “Handle With Care.”

“I’ve been hanging around Nashville for 45 years,” said Jimmy. “I used to go to the Ryman and cover shows when I worked for Billboard and have seen many great performances recently, but had never played there until Saturday night. Thanks Jenny Lwis for making the first appearance so special and letting me join the band! That said, do I get per diem?”

Jimmy Performs at Margaritaville Hollywood Beach

November 14th, 2015

Jimmy Buffett was in South Florida on Saturday afternoon to perform for the official grand opening of the Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort.

As the sun dropped and the rain drifted out to sea, thousands of people massed along the Broadwalk in front of Margaritaville for the official grand opening of the Buffett-themed resort that now stands as the beach’s new centerpiece. The $150 million attraction offers more than just 349 rooms, eight bars and a spa — it’s also a beacon of hope that this snowbird paradise will at last become a first-class tourist destination.

“Let’s put the top down on this place!” Buffett shouted to kick off the one and a half-hour free concert.

The high-tech, slickly produced Live Nation Jimmy Buffett concert production — bigger and louder than anything Hollywood beach has ever seen before — was greeted by veteran Parrotheads and Hollywood locals but did not come without controversy; residents took to social media in the days before to decry what some criticized as a VIP-only exclusive event.

But most of the stage was visible, and by the time Buffett took the stage at 4:30 p.m. it was already 5 o’clock somewhere. The complaints had, for the most part, been drowned down with a few beers, some shots of tequila and Buffett magic.
