Jerry Jeff Walker Passes Away from Cancer

October 25th, 2020

The man who introduced Jimmy Buffett to Key West has passed away after a battle with throat cancer. Jerry Jeff Walker, most famous for the song “Mr. Bojangles,” was 78.

The Margaritaville Key West website details Buffett and Walker’s venture to Key West:

Jimmy Buffett arrived in Key West in November 1971 with singer and songwriter Jerry Jeff Walker (already famous for “Mr. Bojangles”) and Teresa “Murphy” Clark. Jerry Jeff, Murphy and her young son, Justin, had offered Jimmy refuge in their open-air Coconut Grove home after Jimmy fled Nashville’s weather and business climate.

His marriage to his hometown sweetheart had ended, and he’d failed to find many open doors in the Music City. The record industry didn’t understand the young man’s style, motivation or lyrics. Murphy and Jerry Jeff wanted to deliver some happiness to dispel Jimmy’s gloom and sense of loss. After a week or two of Florida-orientation, they piled into “Flying Lady,” Jerry Jeff’s elegant silver and maroon ’47 Packard sedan, for a drive southward. Jimmy Buffett had never before seen the Florida Keys. Key West was an outpost over 100 miles from our mainland – closer to Cuba than to Florida – a place of fascinating history and charm, dependent upon the ocean for much of its income yet subject to the whims of weather and the perils of change. Jimmy’s discovery of the island meant everything to the man.

It changed his life and countless other lives in turn. As time passes, that quick November 1971 jaunt to the Keys means more and more to the island, the state of Florida, and the national culture.

Jimmy posted a tribute on social media:

Jimmy Buffett Joins Eli Young Band for ‘Saltwater Gospel’

August 21st, 2020

The Eli Young Band has recruited Jimmy Buffett for a ‘Fins up version’ of their song “Saltwater Gospel”:

Originally released in 2016, the song was never a major hit at country radio, but lead singer Mike Eli says he always thought this song stood out.

“We’d always known from the early days of playing ‘Saltwater Gospel’ live that it was special. Crowds would sing along as if it was already a huge hit. Our team noticed a massive swell of streaming recently and some radio stations began playing it again. With signs there was more life to this song, the idea of re-releasing a fresh version was really exciting for us to explore,” he explains. “We aimed high thinking how cool it would be to have Jimmy Buffett, but finding out he was interested, we were pumped! He’s an icon who’s made a huge impact on the world with fans completely devoted to his persona and laidback party environment. Plus, he likes a drink now and then, and so do we.”

Caroline Jones on What It’s Like Touring with Jimmy

April 1st, 2020

SongFacts.com has an interview with Caroline Jones where she discusses what it is like going on tour with Jimmy Buffett:

Songfacts: What’s it like being on tour with Jimmy Buffett?

Jones: It’s really, really fun. It’s a whole culture and a whole lifestyle in itself. In the beginning it was something to get used to because I hadn’t seen it before, but the Parrot Heads are just such a special, unique group of people and it’s so interesting because they’re all walks of life with all different jobs – doctors and lawyers by day and then at night they put a parrot on their head and have a margarita in their hand and are wearing a Hawaiian shirt and flip-flops.

Something that touring with Jimmy taught me is the value of a shared value system, and also imagination. Being able to imagine yourself in his song in a place where you have no responsibilities and no burdens and no cold weather and you’re just living free and unburdened. That emotion through music is so powerful for people that they spend their hard-earned money to go to that show and feel those feelings. It’s really powerful and really special. It’s the power of art and music, and Jimmy has tapped into that very authentically because that’s what he loves. He changes people’s lives. He inspires them through that.

Songfacts: Can you elaborate on “shared value system”?
