Democrats Turn to Buffett to Get Out The Vote in Florida

October 28th, 2010

According to the National Journal, Florida Democrats are reaching out to Jimmy Buffett hoping he’ll help get out the vote in the state ahead of Tuesday’s election:

Florida Democratic sources tell National Journal that Sink’s campaign, panicked by what it considered an alarming advantage for Republicans in early vote totals so far, on Wednesday called Florida’s senior Senator, Democrat Bill Nelson, to seek his help in bringing Buffett into the mix. Nelson then called former Senate colleague, Bob Graham, to reach out to Buffett. Graham has been personal friends with Buffett since the early 1980s and it was Graham’s relationship with Buffett that brought him into state Democratic politics when Graham was governor. Graham called Buffett Thursday and asked him to do as many events as possible on Monday, election eve. Buffett said his schedule prevented that, but he is considering some involvement in get-out-the-vote efforts this weekend, Democratic sources said.

Earlier this month Jimmy played a fundraiser for gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink.

On Sunday, Jimmy Buffett performed at a fundraiser for Florida governor candidate Alex Sink. The event raised $500,000 for Sink.

The set was short — just a few songs, including “Margaritaville” and “Volcano.” But the cash haul was big — about $500,000, according to Morgan.

“The best night ever,” Morgan said, adding that the highlight was when Buffett agreed to play his and his wife’s special song: “Come Monday.”

Jimmy Buffett will perform at a fundraiser for Florida gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink this Sunday, according to St. Petersburg Times political reporter Alex Leary. Sink, a Democrat, is facing Republican Rick Scott in the general election.

A lifelong Democrat, Buffett often plays fundraisers for Democratic candidates in election years, especially Florida candidates. In 2008 he played a fundraiser in Tampa for Barack Obama.

The solo acoustic show will be held at the home of trial lawyer John Morgan. Want to go? It’ll cost you a cool $5,000 per person.

Jimmy Attends Clinton Birthday Bash

August 23rd, 2010

Last week Jimmy Buffett attended a star-studded birthday party in the Hamptons for former president Bill Clinton:

Among the glitterati on the guest list for Clinton’s 64th birthday party, were designer Vera Wang, who created his daughter Chelsea’s wedding gown, TV host Katie Couric and music icons Paul McCartney and Jimmy Buffett.

The party was held at the Water Mill home of his longtime aide Doug Band and his wife, Lily, and catered by Jason Weiner of Almond restaurant in Bridgehampton.

Clinton’s wife, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, co-hosted the party that was also said to include model Christie Brinkley, “Today Show” host Matt Lauer and Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein.

Clinton’s birthday was Thursday, and McCartney made the ex-president’s day by calling and serenading him with The Beatles’ 1967 hit “When I’m Sixty-Four.”

In the summer of 2000, Jimmy and the Coral Reefers played on the South Lawn of the White House for Clinton’s birthday.
