Work halted on Jimmy’s grandfather’s shipwreck

October 12th, 2007

The Press-Register has an article on Buffett’s grandfather’s shipwreck in Mobile:

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Thursday ordered a condo developer to stop digging up the sunken remains of a four-masted schooner once captained by the grandfather of singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett.

The decaying wooden hulk is that of the Chiquimula, a longtime Mobile Bay-area landmark, which was commanded for many years by Capt. James Buffett, a highly regarded Gulf Coast master mariner.

The vessel’s charred hull, buried for more than 50 years beside the shore of Blakeley River near the Causeway, lies in the way of plans for boat slips at Shellbank Landing, a planned 57-unit condominium project.

Last week, a diving contractor hired by real estate developer Dent Boykin and his business partners began using a high-pressure pump to uncover the underwater remains of what Boykin thought was a vessel singer Jimmy Buffett mentions in a song and in a book.

Warren Buffett and Jimmy aren’t related afterall

May 28th, 2007

It turns out that Jimmy Buffett and Warren Buffett aren’t related afterall. Fortune magazine has an article on the issue: “The Buffett mystery”

About two months ago Warren and Jimmy submitted DNA to 23andMe (an ancestry firm started by Google founder Sergey Brin and his wife, Anne Wojcicki.)

When the results came back a month later, Wojcicki – a 33-year-old Yale grad and former health-care industry analyst – and her associate Joanna Mountain called Warren from 23andMe’s offices, just half a mile from Google’s Mountain View, Calif., campus, and broke the news that he need not include Jimmy in his will. In fact, “I’m as closely related to you as Jimmy is,” said Mountain, the head of 23andMe’s ancestry product line and a former professor of anthropological genetics at Stanford.

As it turns out, Jimmy and Warren do have common ancestors, but you have to go back more than 10,000 years to find them. That’s before surnames, folks. “Bottom line: We’re not related,” Warren wrote to his sister Doris, the family genealogist, who opened this whole can of worms many years ago.

Buffett in New Orleans to Honor Ed Bradley

April 27th, 2007

Jimmy Buffett was at Jazz Fest in New Orleans today to take part in a tribute to the late Ed Bradley.

Bradley, who died in November, had wanted to be remembered at the festival with a “second line” parade, so-called because watchers often fall in to form a second line of paraders.

Quint Davis introduced singer Jimmy Buffett as the person who first brought Bradley to the festival in the 1980s, and the first to pull him up on a stage and hand him a tambourine.

“Bless you, Father, for bringing us a really bad tambourine player but a great friend,” Buffett said Friday.

Buffett took credit for giving Bradley the nickname “Teddy Badly.” About 45 of Bradley’s friends participating in the parade wore small green pins with the name “Teddy” printed on them.
