One Irvine Show Down, One To Go

April 21st, 2006

Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band brought their Party At The End Of The World Tour into Irvine, California on Thursday night for the first of two shows.

The set list changed a lot from the first show of the tour. Buffett mixed in a cover of the Mama’s and Papa’s “California Dreamin,” and played “California Promises”, the first time it had been played since 2001. The featured album of the night was One Particular Harbour. At intermission, the video for “Livin’ It Up” was shown.

The tour continues on Saturday night with the second show from Irvina.

OC Register Review of Irvine Show

April 21st, 2006

Gary Robbins of the Orange County Register wrote a review of Thursday night’s Irvine, California show:

This time around, Buffett was energetic, wistful and direct. He opened the show with a solo version of “Boat Drinks,” a drinking song for a well-lubricated crowd. His Parrothead fans had been tipping margaritas in the parking lot for hours. (One woman was giving them away in exchange for a kiss.)

What made the song special was the vibe Buffett gave off. He seemed to be saying he was genuinely thrilled to be in Irvine on a cool spring night, just as the stars began to appear through the haze. He spoke fondly of California all evening, and gave an impish apology for dissing the state in one of his oldest hits, “Come Monday.”

He also took a big risk, which caught me off guard. Early in the show, he and his band covered one of the most cherished songs of the 1960s, “California Dreamin’.” by the Mamas and the Papas. Buffett doesn’t have a broad vocal range. But he gave the song its due, and the harmonies of the Coral Reefer Band were tight and lush.

Comprehensive Guide to Attending a Buffett Concert

April 13th, 2006

The East Valley Tribune has a comprehensive guide to attending a Jimmy Buffett concert:

They sound like something out of a Roger Corman horror flick from the ’50s. They are known as “Heads,” those ardent fans of bands like the Grateful Dead (Deadheads), Phish (Phishheads) and Dave Matthews Band (Daveheads).

Locally, we have the Peaceheads, fans of Tempe’s Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers.

But while what you need to fit in with Deadheads (tie-dyed shirt, funky brownies), Daveheads (shorts, T-shirt) or Peaceheads (straw cowboy hat, petroglyph medallion) is pretty simple, fitting in with the Parrotheads, those wacky Jimmy Buffett “PHanatics,” requires a lot more to blend in with the “PHlock.”

Here is Get Out’s guide for everything you need to hit Jimmy Buffett’s show Tuesday.

Read on here.
