In 1999 I made a trip to Rachel, Nevada, the closest town to Area 51. The one and only bar in the little town had a gaggle of characters that spent their time watching and speculating on the happenings at Area 51. i remember them telling me about and agreeing on two things:

* a ball of light would bounce around the valley at night at very high speeds; they said that it didn't seem to be a projection but rather something physical and that the speed had been calculated at around Mach 2 without breaking the sound barrier

* the Feds had a vehicle that was going into orbit and returning a few days later. They said that it was being launched from a rocket and returning to land like an airplane. One of the folks that I talked to was a professional astronomer that taught at a university and he implied that he had some modest abilities to track whatever it was.
