Some very mindbending special effects in this one. I've come to expect no less from Terry Gilliam over the years.

What did you think of this movie, Jah? I would not consider myself an avid reader, but I read a novel or 2/month. John Grisham's Skipping Christmas was so much better than the film version, so I was very disappointed with it the first time I saw it. The book was fresh in my mind when I first saw it so I kept thinking about the differences and inconsistencies. I saw part of it on Christmas Eve while flipping around and I didn't think it was as awful as I remember.

I've never read the book and to be honest, I haven't even heard of it until I considered renting the movie recently. What prompted that was reading where someone online considered it a favorite. Then, I was in Blockbuster the other night and one of the clerks on duty said it was one of her favorite movies so I figured I'd give it a shot. I really wasn't that taken with it up until the part where the daughter comes home early for Christmas. Then, it seemed to pick up steam but I don't see it as ever becoming a seasonal favorite of mine.

Not sure if there's any fans of the Replacements here but if there are, I highly recommend attending a screening of this movie. To see if it's playing in your town check the listings on the official website. If it's not, contact the filmmaker (Gorman Bechard) through the website about how to organize a grassroots effort to bring the movie to your area. This will work best if you have a local theatre that is indie film friendly. I saw it at the Nightlight in Chapel Hill which is a bar so that would work as well. This is a rather unconventional film that uses a very unique approach to tell the story of the Replacements. Still, it succeeds even though there's no live footage or music from the band (or any interviews with the band members themselves) included in the movie. It unfolds via testimonials from friends, fans, celebrities, former employees, critics, writers and fellow artists. In that sense, it's very similar to Jim Walsh's book about them from a few years ago called All Over But the Shouting that was also done without any sort of input from the Replacements. That approach also reminds me of the Replacements' video for "Bastards of Young" which they refused to appear in. Instead, it's a lone shot of a stereo playing the song. Meant at the time as a f*ck you to MTV (as well as their label) it went on to become one of the most iconic videos of it's time. Like All Over But the Shouting and "Bastards of Young", Color Me Obsessed succeeds in spite of the lack of participation of the Replacements which is a pretty powerful testament to the power of their music.
