Another thing I've read about, but can't seem to find now, is that it's entirely possible that an alien space probe could fly thru our solar system and we not see it. The Voyager probes aren't really that big and if they ran out of power then maybe they aren't putting out any electromagnetic waves that could be picked up by antennas on earth.
It's all just so fascinating to think about and read about.
