Another thing I've read about, but can't seem to find now, is that it's entirely possible that an alien space probe could fly thru our solar system and we not see it. The Voyager probes aren't really that big and if they ran out of power then maybe they aren't putting out any electromagnetic waves that could be picked up by antennas on earth.

It's all just so fascinating to think about and read about.

Unless alien lifespans are much, much longer than ours then in order for space travel to be practical they would either have to be traveling at a speed faster than light, or traveling through some sort of portal like a wormhole. And we don't have the ability to observe either condition.

What bothers me is that consistently, throughout human history, when a civilization with superior technology meets a society with inferior technology it's superior tech that wipes out the other culture. As fascinating as it is to think about meeting aliens I have to wonder if it's the right time or if perhaps we should wait.
