Jimmy Buffett 2014 Year in Review

In just a couple days it’ll be 2015, so let’s take a look back on Jimmy Buffett news in 2014.

January

  • Jimmy performed at a fundraiser to restore Miami Marine Stadium
  • On a hop around Jamaica, Jimmy dropped in to his Ocho Rios and Montego Bay Margaritaville locations
  • Dan Patrick was interviewing Warren Buffett on his radio show when Jimmy called in too
  • The first spring tour dates were announced on January 24th: Tampa and West Palm Beach in April
  • Jimmy attended the Battioke charity event put on by the Miami Heat’s Shane Battier where he sang “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” with Pat Riley
  • In an interview with Beaches, Resorts, & Parks, Jimmy revealed that he’s working on a new book

February

  • The first week of February saw several spring and summer tour dates announced, and by the end of the month nearly the entire tour schedule was out with tickets on sale
  • Jimmy performed with Zac Brown at the ForEverglades Benefit
  • The Margaritaville in Destin, Florida opened its doors on February 17th
  • On a swing through San Francisco, Jimmy sat down with Tekzilla to talk about technology

March

  • Jimmy played a couple of small shows in Australia

April

  • Though most of you recognized it as a joke right away, we did manage to fool a few with our annual April Fools Joke: “Buffett to Launch ‘Margaritaville Pleasures’ Adult Products”
  • On April 11th, longtime Buffett friend and collaborator Jesse Winchester died after battling cancer
  • Jimmy wrapped up the Songs From St. Somewhere Tour with shows in Tampa, West Palm Beach, Raleigh, and Charlotte
  • The Margaritaville chain of restaurants was sold to the Brazil-based International Meal Co.

May

  • On May 2nd, Jimmy visited the New Orleans Jazzfest where he walked around anonymously in a ball cap and sunglasses and enjoyed some of Prejean’s Restaurant’s pheasant, quail and Andouille sausage gumbo
  • On May 3rd, Jimmy joined Allen Toussaint on stage at Jazz Fest for a couple of songs
  • Jimmy launched Margaritaville.TV in late May to coincide with the start of the This One’s For You Tour
  • The May 24th concert in Virginia Beach kicked off the This One’s For You Tour and also was the first show to air live on Margaritaville.TV
  • Jimmy performed at Chastain Park Amphitheater in Atlanta, a venue he hadn’t played at in 27 years
  • Shows in Houston and Austin, TX rounded out the first leg of the new tour

June

  • The This One’s For You Tour made stops in Frisco, Fort Worth, Cleveland, Indianapolis, and Chicago
  • Margaritaville Pigeon Forge opened its doors on June 16th
  • Jimmy was “way too excited the Heat are losing” when he was shown on television during an NBA Finals game in Miami
  • On June 17th, Jimmy appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon as they taped a week of shows in Orlando
  • It was reported that Jimmy and his wife Jane dropped a few million on a home in Beverly Hills, CA
  • Jimmy’s June 19th performance at the Coyote Drive-In in Fort Worth was simulcast to drive-ins around the country
  • The Orlando Business Journal noticed that Jimmy’s Margaritaville Enterprises had filed a trademark application for the term “Coral Reefer” to be used to sell goods and services related to electronic cigarettes

July

  • Jimmy made tour stops in Bethel NY, Mansfield MA, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, and Detroit

August

  • Buffett plays shows in Bristow VA, Camden NJ, Wantagh NY, East Troy WI, and Hershey PA
  • Jimmy played a free show in Hermosa Beach as part of the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week FinFest
  • As the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge spread around the world in the summer, Jimmy was challenged by his daughter Savannah and several others

September

  • On September 15th the Margaritaville Casino in Biloxi closed its doors after only two years of operation
  • Jimmy made his annual trek to Paris where he played two shows at La Cigale

October

  • Jimmy made a west coast swing in October, played shows in Santa Barbara, Las Vegas, Portland, and Berkeley CA
  • On October 8th, Jimmy was in San Francisco at Vanity Fair’s New Establishment Summit where he asked the Spotify CEO for a raise
  • A week before the midterm elections, Jimmy played a get-out-the-vote rally for Florida congressional candidate Gwen Graham. She would go on to win the election, unseating incumbent Steve Southerland
  • From his home in Florida, Jimmy recorded a video expressing his support for two Florida ballot initiatives: the Florida Water and Land Conservation Initiative, and the Florida Right to Medical Marijuana Initiative. The Water and Land initiative passed, but medical marijuana was voted down on election day

November

  • Mac McAnally set a record with his seventh consecutive CMA Musician of the Year Award

December

  • Jimmy was mentioned at the daily White House press briefing on December 3rd
  • It was announced that a Margaritaville restaurant will be added to the Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Escape in 2015
  • Jimmy sat in with Anders Osborne at Tipitina’s in New Orleans December 6th
  • After leaving New Orleans, Jimmy dropped in on his hometown of Pascagoula, MS where he dined at a local eatery
  • On December 25th, Jimmy celebrated his 68th birthday
